Miha
Hi, I was reading some older posts regarding this question. Shun clearly showed that high power TC (2x) plus zoom (80 - 200 or 70 - 200) doesn't reach the quality of low power TC (1,4x) plus prime (300 f/4). But what of the oppposite ? How does the 200 - 400 f/4 plus 1,4TC compare to 300 f/2,8 plus 2xTC, thus combining less compromising TC with zoom and more demanding TC with high quality prime. The reach 560 f/5.6 and 600 f/5.6 (and the prices) of the two lenses are allmost comparable. Regards, Miha.
Peter_in_PA
Bjørn Rørslett LOVES this lens. He says the TC slows it down, but doesn't go into detail on quality with the 1.4, I'm sure he's tried it. He reads this forum, so maybe he'll pipe up. Miha
Hi, Peter, Bjoern also says, the 300 mm f/2,8 VR works well with a TC, but he does not compare the two lenses. Regards, Miha.
ShunCheung
I have used all of the lenses mentioned so far in this thread. My experience is that (1) zooms do not work well with teleconvertors, (2) fixed focal length teles work well with the 1.4x TC. If you put either a 1.7x or 2x TC on a prime, the quality starts getting iffy, (3) Nikon AF gets poor once your effective maximum aperture drops below f5.6. Therefore, if you put a 1.7x or 2x TC on an f4 lens, AF on the combo suffers a lot, especially if you are shooting something in the shades. In other words, if you want quality results at 500mm or 600mm, pay the big bucks and get a 500mm/f4 or 600mm/f4. I had no problem using a 1.4x TC on the 500mm/f4 on any film body. The D2X is more demanding on the optics and even that combo starts showing problems on digital.
