travis l.
My leica rep brought his new M8 by the store today, this is a full on production camera with the latest firmware. I was very impressed to say the least, it looked, felt and handled just like an M camera.<div></div>

jackson loi
Travis, the images look pretty good! I would miss the silky advance levers of the film-based M's. Are you buying one (or two)!?
travis l.
Jackson, Before this morning I was a diehard film user, now I'm not so sure. That doesn't change the fact that I can't possibly afford one, let alone two. Travis<div></div>
samir
Travis, Does it mean stores will start stocking them? Or is it still one sample for some VIP photographers? Thanks for the pics. The one at high ISO looks clean, how does it look viewed at 100 percent?
travis l.
Samir, To my knowledge none are available in the US at this time, we are expecting our first allocation anytime now (all sold). My rep tells me not to expect the second shipment until the fist of the year.<div></div>

liang_kong_rui
Looks like typical digital images to me. Am I missing something? How can one justify the price of such a tool?
al_kaplan1
If you shoot for publications that want digital and you already have a set of Leica lenses buying an M8 makes a lot of sense.
stephen_w.
"How can one justify the price of such a tool?" If the company pays. If one uses it professionally, taking a tax write-off, it's a hobby. How much does one pay for other necessities such as life/car/home finances fees during any given year? How about a week vacation for the family of 3.5? BTW, I'm not interested in the M8, but am not dissing the ones that are.
rj
I noticed in the past that when people justified paying the extra cost of DSLRs over the film counterpart they said the difference equals the cost you will pay for film. In other words, the cost difference is made up with the shooting you do. Wouldn't this be the same with the m8?

andreas_holmstr_m
IMHO the Leica M8 is pretty affordable. around 4000euros new. Compare it to Canon and Nikon top-notch digital SLR prices... And wich would you rather get? Like any digital camera the M8 will probably loos atleast 30% from the New price after one year in service. And I do believe that now when they have to body, updating it with better/bigger sensors, faster processors and better software is rather easy. I expect new versions introduced rather frequently. mattalofs
Although I can see a lot of potential in the M8, I'm slightly dissapointed in the high noise levels seen in the sample pics in Sean Reid's review. I'm also slightly concerned that they've buried too many functions in the menus. So far, the biggest point in the M8's favor is that its the only game in town if you want to use a current production digital RF. That's not an entirely convincing argument for buying $5000 camera. inspiration point studio
How come the so called M8 you're showing in the pics have a film advance lever and a mechanical film counter?
inspiration point studio
Oops. My misunderstanding. You were using a M8, taking pics of something else.
andreas_holmstr_m
In my opinion, the noise levels at 2500iso are extremely low! On par with old CCD chips at 400iso!
pavel_olavich
I don't think noise performance can be concluded with those few photographs.
