ivan_cimrak
I plan to buy some flash. I use both SLR Canon 3000 (Rebel) and digital camera Kodak P850. Is there any problem to buy a flash that suits both cameras? I am interested in Sunpak PZ-5000 but they sell it always "for Canon" or "for Minolta".... Does it mean, that this can not be properly used on Kodak P850?
alan_chan4
If you buy dedicated flash, they are not interechangable. There are some exceptions like some Metz, Sunpak or Nissin flashes with interchangable shoe (not sure if support Kodak). Another option is to buy non-dedicated auto/manual flash which will work on all cameras w/o TTL flash. Sunpak 383 is a nice choice.
peter_phan
Get a simple non-dedicated autoflash like the Metz 36 C-2: http://www.metz.de/en/photo_electronics/mecablitz_36_C-2.179.html It costs $99: http://www.adorama.com/MZ36C2.html, and you can use it with any camera. craig_gillette
"Dedicated" flashes will have additional contacts and circuitry - the recent Maxxums have an entirely different shoe as well. TTL flashes are typically controled by the body, so depending on the separate control features offered by the flash, you might be able to use it in limited or a single mode or it may not work. I'd agree a non dedicated flash is likely to be a better bet if trying to use different cameras/brands.
pavelp
Check Promaster flashes. They make modular units, flash-head + shoe-module. You buy the flash-head and as many modules as you need to serve all your cameras. I use their 5700 unit (GN=130) for all my medium format rigs (with the basic MANUAL/AUTO module), then with Minolta MF MANUAL/AUTO/TTL module for my X-700 and again with Minolta MANUAL/TTL module for Maxxum 7. The flash head is around $100, the modules are anywhere between $20 and $40 a piece (depends on how much inteligence is in the module). You can same thing with SunPak 120J-TTL flash and most likely there'll be other brands that offer similar convenience.
rob_murray
The good old Vivitar 283 will work fine in Auto mode. Plenty of power, cheap, excellent exposure system, fast recycle with NIMH batteries, has bounce head also.
