ashosakinawa
Hi all Panasonic Lovers, I am 80% convinced that Panasonic DMC-FZ20 is my best choice for an SLR-like Camera for a beginner photographer like me. The only competitor for this camera -on my own viewpoint- is the Nikon Coolpix 5700. If any one can give me another similar and powerful brand in the field of the digital imaging instead of 'Panasonic', I will be thankful but keep in your mind that: 1) The new and competitive camera to the Panasonic DMC-FZ20 should have a Zoom Tele >=400mm [The Panasonic DMC-FZ20 has a Zoom Tele =432mm]. 2) The competitive camera to the Panasonic DMC-FZ20 should be no more than <=$500 USD [The Panasonic DMC-FZ20 costs around $500]. 3) The competitive camera to the Panasonic DMC-FZ20 should has an effective pixels >=5.0 MP [The Panasonic DMC-FZ20 has a 5.0 MP]. 4) I am not convinced that 'Panasonic' is a great brand in the field of the digital imaging like other famous brands (Nikon or Konica Minolta or Canon). So, the competitive camera to the Panasonic DMC- FZ20 should be manufactured by a famous brand. It is a puzzle and if someone would tell me to go and buy 'Panasonic DMC-FZ20', I would go right now and buy it. Thanx .. Ash ..

eric_perlberg
I've owned the Nikon Coolpix 5700 and I own a Panasonic FZ20. The Nikon is a much older design camera and while it was OK in its time, it's not up to the FZ20. This is a no-brainer. What I particularly like about the FZ20 is a) the lens is fantastic; sharp, excellent contrast, smooth bokeh and that fantastically long reach to 430mm b) the image stabilisation is brilliant giving 3+ stops of improvement over the already fast 2.8 lens The one thing that I preferred on the Nikon is that the rear LCD was hinged but that would not be enough to make you purchase that camera, just one of the few short comings of the FZ20. Maybe Panasonic is not, in your words, a famous brand, but they make excellent cameras when they partner with Leica (not all panasonics use Leica lenses but the FZ20 does as well as the higher end LC1) which you can see by looking up reviews on them at places like dpreview.com, steves digicam, and other such review sites. You have to realise that no camera is without compromises and the FZ20 has its share. Also technology will move on and either Panasonic or someone else will soon produce an even better camera. Lastly, no camera makes interesting images and good photographers can make interesting images with whatever camera they happen to have.
godfrey
You've asked this same question at least twice. If you want someone to make up your mind for you, forget it. No one can do that. Godfrey
agardner58
Ash, on March 21 you were 80% sure about this camera. On March 22, you were 90% sure about the camera. Shouldn't you be around 110% sure by now? Its a good digital camara. If you have the money and you want it, go out an buy it...today. Then come back and tell us if it isn't great. If you don't want to do that, maybe you can give me the $500 so I can buy it for myself.
Greg M
No, now he's a 110% Pentax DSLR guy now. See a more recent post. Can't wait for the next post, Ash. It's been a couple of hours- surely you've changed to another model by now.

alessandro_dolci
The FZ20 is the ultra zoom camera to beat now. Only the big electronic companies can compete with so expensive stabilized sensor, and if you use the 430 without a tripod the stabilized sensor is fundamental. Waste no time, otherwise sony will announce a new ultrazoom and you'll never take pics!!! Alessandro
