Canon Rebel XT v. Canon 20D (dreaming of 5D)

I shoot a Rebel and have been happy with it. I Want a Canon 5D, wife

will leave me...So, next best, since I have good glass, I gotta stay

with Canon. How much better is the 20D than the XT for the three

($300) or four ($400) hundred dollars? And frankly, is the 5D $2000

grand better for an amateur anyway? It's beyond my experience I

suppose. But for cropping I really would like at least an 8mp

camera. Thanks.

The image quality from the XT and 20D is essentially the same. However the 20D is a nicer camera to use and has a number of additional features as described here:

Whether the additional features of the 20D are worth $400 or not depends on how you will use the camera and what your budget is. For me, the extra money spent on the 20D was worth it. For others, it wouldn't be.

For a typical amateur I don't think the 5D is worth $2000 over a 20D unless $2000 is pocket change to you. I wouldn't go into debt for it. Whether your wife leaving you is a plus or a minus depends on your personal circumstances....

I agree with Bob about the picture quality. There is only so much improvement you can have in digital picture quality (@ a given pixel rate) when you shoot RAW. keep the XT and buy a 17-40 (if you don't already own one). cheers,
