dendronphoto
Hi everyone, that's the first time for me in this forum. I owe a Canon 75-300 4.5/5.6 IS zoom lens for my Eos 3 but I'm not very satisfied with it; the stabilizer works quite well but at 300mm the images are a bit soft, not very sharp. I read good things about Canon 70-200 f/4: has anyone ever used it in addition to a 1.4x extender? Is the quality still very good? Does it decrease with a 2x extender? Thank you to anyone who can reply. Daniele
yakim_peled1
First lesson: Search first, ask later.

The 70-200/4 is an excellent lens. That said, the new 70-300 IS is also very good. Follow the links in this thread.

1.4X will degrade image quality to a very little extent. 2X are the complete opposite. You also lose AF with most cameras. See here and here for details.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
dcheung
I wouldn't even consider using the 70-200 F4 with the 2X teleconverter. You loose 2 stops of light which means you will lose autofocus unless u have a 1-series body. Even if you do have autofocus, it will be very slow. As for using it with the 1.4x teleconverter, I still wouldn't recommend it. Using a 70-200 F2.8 with the 2x extender makes an effective apperature of 5.6 and makes autofocus very slow. Since, using the F4 with the 1.4x converter will also make an effective apperature of 5.6, I would assume autofocus would be slow as well. With that said, your image quality will be better than that of your 75-300.
awindsor
I have the old 75-300 without IS. The 70-200/4L + 1.4x is a lens combination that I would not hesitate to use for 10" x 15" prints. It is far superior to my old 75-300. The new 70-300 IS is getting really nice reviews.
photographicsafaris
EOS 3 Autofocuses well with the f4 and 2x converter. the 70-200 and 1.4x canon extender gets regular use on a 10D and film bodies I have been really happy with the results. Autofocus is as fast just sometimes it will miss the subject in horizontal selections or heavily shaded areas. Better quality that the old 75-300IS lens, but without IS I would not recomend the 2x extender with this lens the quality is not worth it, rather buy a longer lens 300 f4 or 400 5.
patrick_micheletti
hello Daniele I am very satisfied with the combination 70-200L4 and ext 1.4X canon on my 20D i join an example http://www.pbase.com/isogood/image/52514205 Patrick
jim_larson1
I upgraded to the 70-200/4L from the 75-300 non-IS. I swear by the 70-200/4L with 1.4 extender. Only downside is the lack of image stabilization. The 70-300/5.6-IS is a bit cheaper than the 70-200/4L-IS with TC. It has IS, is a bit slower (in the mid range where you take the TC off the 70-200), a bit lower image quality.

awindsor
100% crop from the columns on the right hand side. Forgive the skewed horizon. I left my bubble level at home.

awindsor
Crop of the roof. I am very happy with this level of detail from the 70-200/4 + 1.4x TC. This easily gives good prints at 10"x 15".
