Upgraded from Canon D30 to Nikon D70

I just upgraded the Canon D30 (w/ Leica lenses which I still use and one

Canon lens) to Nikon D70 with a few Nikkors. I like the weight

reduction (although the D70 may have more plastic) and improvement in

image quality. The matrix metering is typically effective although I

do like the spot metering option which is way more accurate than the

one on the D30.

Nikon is very good for my professional work and I hope to be able to

use it more for my foto shoots. I will be attending the PhotoPlus Expo

and can't wait to see what Nikon accessories are available as such.

Why didn't you get a Canon 10 or 20D? You can't use your leica lenses on the Nikon.

I have a hand full of Leica and Nikon lenses, and that is what would stop me from getting

a Nikon. With the Nikons you can't meter with non af nikkors, but with the Canon you can

meter with any lens you can stick on there.

I am using an E10, which I love but it is very long in the tooth, and tops out at a very

noisy 320 asa. I am looking at a 10 or 20D.

Wouldn't a D1x perform better than the 10D, for less money than the 20D, and be compatible with pre-AF Nikkor glass? If you want to go Canon by all means do it (I'll take care of some of that Nikkor glass for you!), but your reasoning seems pretty awkward, I think a D50/D50 if farther away from the 10D/20D than the D1x. That's just my opinion.

Not that Alfie needs anyone to answer for him, Claude, but I can think of some very good reasons why the D70 is a better choice than the 10D or 20D. Even someone who's already using another system may not be dug in so deep that switching is impractical.

When it was introduced the D70 was generally considered a more capable camera than the 10D. The 20D topped the D70 in some ways, but it was also significantly more expensive. Some folks would rather save some money to put into lenses, flash, etc., than pop the whole budget on a body.

Lex, it's funny how if you read the posts on here, a lot of your questions are answered. Yesterday I was thinking about upgrading from my D70 to a 1X or 2h to maybe improve my images. I'm not a pro, age 66, but I enjoy photography for many years...F3HP, Pentax 645, FM2...now using kit lens and/or Tokina AF28-70 F2.8 AT-X, and my 80-200 Nikon 2.8AF with my D70. Now shooting bluegrass shows..shot a CD cover for one of the bands..etc, just having fun. Now I'm thinking instead, upgrade my glass for the medium range shots 10ft to 20ft based on your comments. Any suggestions?? ...need good depth of field for bluegrass shots f6 to f11 and lite isn't always good..don't like to use my sb800 in their faces. Tks for any input..bob

Bob, since at least I don't know much about your photography, it is impossible for me to say whether the 17-55mm/f2.8 DX is the way to go for you. It is a wonderful lens and is probably the lens I use most in these days. As long as the $1250 price tag is not a problem, that is a lens I can highly recommend to any Nikon DSLR user.
