bernard_frank
I can't seem to find used hoods for the Contax 645 lenses (80 and 140) for sale, either on the auction site or the two big on-line stores. Any hint to where I might have a chance would be appreciated. I live in Montreal, Canada. Thanks.
calvin_lee
I feel for you man. But it makes me feel a little better about my decision to sell off my Contax 645 outfit back in 2003 (645 Body, Prism, Grip, 2 film backs, 45mm, 80mm, 140mm, 210mm, 120mm Macro). At the time, I went to the Hasselblad V system because of the unfulfilled promise of leaf shutter lenses from Contax. There was the MAM-1 Adapter, but I figured that if I were going to use Hasselblad lenses, I may just as well switch the body as well. OTOH, the V system is also dying. Hasselblad seems to be in the process of giving the V system a slow death, but at least there is a ton of stuff on the used market for it. In all fairness though, I thought the Zeiss lenses for the Contax were simply superb. Easily the equal, if not sharper than the 'Blad lenses. I also found the ergonmics of the Contax 645 to be very nice, and the build quality of the lenses to be outstanding.
lee hamiel
bernard: I would suggest getting the compendium hood as it will work with all lenses down to I believe 45mm. It's listed as GB-B1 & goes for about the same price as some single hoods. See: http://www.photo.net/photo/3968003 This is an image from the Contax brochure. I agree - they are hard to find now - maybe a company will make a set of generic hoods sized exactly the same as the originals.
bernard_frank
Thanks, guys. Yes, Lee, I have a bellows hood in my sights from a friend of mine. I first turned it down because it is big and unwieldy but I might reconsider. There is also the Cokin solution and its square hoods you can pile on top of one another on the same adaptor and holder as their filter system. I'll look into that as well. hendrik
Try these guys in Hong Kong. They have an online, auctionsite and phisical store. Here's the link to the C645 accesories: http://www.hksupplies.com/product/product1.cfm?page=3&type=Contax%20645%20AF%20Accessories They seem to have stock of just about all the C645 goods and will ship worldwide. bobmichaels
Is there any reason that a generic hood won't work? They are not part of the optical path. I've used a coiled up piece of black paper held onto the lens with a rubber band in a pinch and it did fine.
milan_moudgill
Bernard, get to eBay... search for "Contax 645 lens hood" Currently there are two 71s, one 72, and one each 101 and 74 listed. Now how is that?!! TIP: Hit the "advanced search" blue link (below the "search" field) in the top right part of the page. Fill in a search for "Contax 645 lens hood", and save it as a 'favourite search'. Then ask to be alerted by email when new items come up for auction. Whenever a new hood is listed you will receive a mail automatically. Go online and bid. All the best. I have recently got two hoods, a 210 lens and a cable release, all in great shape, off eBay. Since I have been watching the Contax 645 item very closely over the last few months (my favourite search alert is for "Conatx 645"), I know that hoods regularly come up for auction. So much so that I am confident you will find them easily. Milan
