Here's my humble contribution. First from 35asph.

I tried just show the wide open shots to show how each performs in low light. Like Eric said, stopped down, all lenses perform well.

Thanks everyone for making this a very classy thread. I have not been deliberately neglecting it. I had to sleep! (Remember I am on UK time.)

I think I am going to have to brace myself for the extra expense of getting an ASPH 35mm Summicron. The non ASPH models just aren't out there and I have noticed the prices of both versions are closing up a lot. (At least in UK they are)

I am not going to single out any individual contributions for fear that those whom I don't name feel a slight.

I will just say that I am d****ed impressed with all of your 35mm Summicron (and the few non Summicron) photos! Thanks again.

Jeremy Tok, that's a very funny shot! Thanks. Anyone would have been in a dilemma where to focus in those circumstances. Who cares, it works.

Rene, please put me out of my misery and explain what is going on in your second shot. Is that banana-wrapping?

What a great thread. These shots certainly tempt me towards a 35 rather than a 50, but whenever I've tried in the past, I've been disappointed on several counts. First, you include more stuff in the frame, so details are smaller and less sharp. Second, it's difficult to exclude irrelevant foreground stuff from the composition without moving in. Third, when you do move in and work close, faces are 'distorted' (OK, not really, but you know what I mean). Anyone be willing to give their experience against these comments?

Trevor, how about spending half the ??? on a 100% 35 Summicron pre-asph equivalent and get AF, AE, winder and stealth mode included for that price? I'm dead serious about this proposal and as another forumer put it, happy as a pig in a muddy puddle with my Hexar AF silver. If you're serious about wanting just that 35 'cron look and not secretly ready to fall prey to the Leica sirens' song which will inevitably make you end up with three bodies and six lenses (I know what I'm talking about... ;-)), then give it a thorough consideration. Cheers.

I am now considering spending even more and getting the ASPH 35/2

I am beyond saving now.

Another 8 days and I will be "On the dark side"

Seriously, yes I gave the Hexar a lot of thought. I gave the AF and RF Hexars consideration especially as there is a tasty Mint- Hexar RF + 50mm f/2 + flash (boxed) available to me for under half of what the M6/35mm will cost me.

I have considered a brand new Zeiss Ikon + 35mm/2 Biogon (same price as as my used Leica budget if not less)

But I have taken the 'compromise' route before with the R3A/Summicron. I really should try out the 'real deal' and with no excuses.

The ultimate rangefinder IS supposed to be the Leica M yes? The 35/2 Summicron is supposed to be the best lens of its type at f/2 - f/5.6 yes?

I have never had the 'best' camera of ANY type before and just this once I can do it (albeit used examples) so I will.

I know that 'tools dont matter' and 'it is the photographer not the camera' but just this once I am going to indulge myself. I want what a lot of you guys have and I am not going to go halfway. Why should I?

Don't forget to factor in the cost of a decent film scanner, otherwise you will be handing over an important part of your creative process to others who probably don't care as much as you about how your images will end up looking.

Outsourcing the developing and scanning process (in my experience) tends to slow down the workflow and acts as a disincentive to making images which after all, is what this is all about.

Anyway, good luck and enjoy whatever you decide to buy.

Trevor, there is no such thing as THE ultimate or best camera. And, yes, tools DO make a difference. Plus, NO, it's not only about the photographer... It's about his/her vision and the best tool for the specific task of translating that precise vision into a photograph.
Just my 2 Eurocent... ;-)

I must say I am a little amused that someone like me (with acute Leica Acquisition Syndrome) on a Leica forum is being encouraged by a couple of Leica owners to buy an AF Konica point-n-shoot but I understand why and I understand the advice is friendly and well meant and very logical and sensible and that the Konica Hexar AF 35/2 is second to none, silent too. But, just this once, I hope you now understand that 'sense' has somewhat flown out the window. The gearhead 'devil' is sitting on my left shoulder and is in determined mood.

Actually not totally insane. If at some point in the near future I wake up regretting the purchase I could get back most (all?) of the money I spent by selling on. I would rather not do that though. I am optimistic that I can get my head around it all and that it is not 'written' somewhere that Trevor.. "shalt not enjoy Leica" or that.. "he will not knoweth the mysterie of the way of M".

A week to go and the Leica gearhead devil is encamped with supplies and tent and patience and a megaphone!

perhaps becasue you already stated you didn't get on with the Bessa and going a step further to a more expesive RF system may seem...silly? You're right, buy used and selling may prove to be an inexpensive tour of duty, one worth going through imo, a notch on the belt.

If this is the case then I would suggest that you do not put a time limit on your search to quell your recent quest. Keep looking, patiently, for a bargain to come along. Rein in your urge.

fwiw, the beach photo of the hippy and oof girl is Doug Ford's, not

Jeremy's. Doug is a very good photographer who doesn't get

enough mention here imo.

The Hexar AF is a comparative bargain, will do most of what a

Leica will do, but they're still very different cameras. It's in large

part a fondling factor, to tell the truth.

Don't forget the size factor of the pre-Asph. It's smaller and

lighter than the asph, and being compact is key to the attraction

of an M. Still way smaller than a D70 or SLR lens though, and

both have that smooooooth focus action.

Ray, Thanks for pointing that (and posting some of your shots).

I have mentioned to Jeremy Tok earlier that he ought to include the artist's name if the posting is not his.

Linking a photo from a posting is fine (it is a fantastic capture) but it is imperative that the real photographer is clearly pointed out.

'written' somewhere that Trevor.. "shalt not enjoy Leica" or that.. "he will not knoweth the mysterie of the way of M".

I'm sure i've read in some old book somewhere, where the name Trevor was mentioned.....
