what kind of film v.20845769xxx

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this question has been asked before but I don't know to this

exact detail...what kind of color slide film would be general purpose,

good saturation but skin tones don't get too crazy and will also work

well with long shutter work (at least 10-15min)..? Is there such a

beast? I plan on doing alot of shooting next week in LA and the

surrounding areas, beach stuff, desert stuff, city, you name it..any

suggestions or should I just pack a variety of film to be safe?

Toan first off this forum is for Black and White film. Secondly I am not sure there is any color slide film that will not have crazy reciprocity when exposed that long. 10 to 15 minutes is a LONG time for any film, and if you loose a stop or two thats an even loder exposure. I would probably use Ektachrome or some thing along those lines. All that being said i'd probably carry 2 different films with me. One for shooting people the other shooting what you need to shoot with those God aweful exposure times.

Is this a good time to be experimenting? What film do you use now, and why? It takes a while to become comfortable with an emulsion - I tend to limit my choices to two or three types. For scenery (with a tripod), I use something rated ISO 100. For people (and hand-held), I prefer ISO 400. There's not much point in carrying "a variety of film to be safe". That only works with a view camera (or interchangeable backs). Otherwise, you always have the wrong film loaded at the wrong time.

If you really don't know what to use, I suggest using negative film. It will give you a lot more latitude.

Try Fuji Velvia 100F (don't confuse with the newest Velvia 100). This emulsion has been rejected by most of outdoor shooters because they think it's too "cool". Most nature photographers prefer warm tone of Velvia 50. But in my opinion Velvia 100F gives the perfect balance of color saturation and natural skin tone. It works very well in overcast day even without using a warming filter. Reciprocity is about +1 stop with 10min shutter speed.
