Buy new lenses today?

Today is the last day for the Canon rebate offer. I am thinking of

buying 3 lenses: 50mm f1.4, 100mm f2.8 macro and 400mm f5.6.

I read a threat recently that Canon will be coming out with some new

lenses next month. For the focal lengths I have mentioned will the

new lenses replace the current models?

As always, anyone who actually knows what Canon will be announcing next week is sworn to secrecy, so you won't get any factual answers here - only speculation.

There is a rumour that there will be a 50/1.2L. This rumour has been around before and it seems like it might be a case of several people saying "Hey, I really wish Canon would bring out a 50/1.2L" and then other people coming along later and saying "Hey, didn't I hear something about a 50/1.2L, when's it coming out?" In any case, if it does appear, it will be much more expensive than the 50/1.4.

The 100/2.8 USM is not all that old and really doesn't need fixing; it's a fantastic lens. So I don't see anything happening there.

IS would be a useful addition to the 400/5.6L, but if Canon were going to add IS to it, they'd probably have done it years ago. I suspect the market for this lens is small enough that it wouldn't make much economic sense to put any more money into it.

Canon has not really shown an interest in primes during the past several years. There are very few exceptions to this. The 100 is actually one of the more recent primes that they have produced, so I definitely would not worry about this. The 50 f/1.4 design could use revamping, but it is fine. There have been some rumors (stress the word rumors) of a 50 f/1.2L coming out. It would probably cost close to $1,000 more, so I don't know that you would be interested here, but perhaps you would. The 400 is a lens that a lot of people would like IS to be added to. This would make sense for Canon to do this, but it is also somewhat unlikely.

The reality is that no-one who actually knows anything can say anything, so anyone else, myself included, are just giving you their guesses.

If these were three lenses that I was interested in (I actually have 2 of the 3), I would just go for it.

There are constant rumors about both the 50/1.4 and the 400/5.6 being replaced "soon", and it never happens.

I have all 3 of those lenses. Very different, all very good. Buy any of them, and you'll have an excellent image-making tool.

I'd be really surprised if the 100/2.8 was replaced. I can't really imaging the 50/1.4 going away (it's really really good for the price, improvements would cost a lot), though I can imagine an expensive 50/1.2L or 50/1.4L popping up (maybe as a 55mm instead of 50). The 400/5.6 might be upgraded to be image-stabilized, but then again if Canon really wanted to do that they'd have done it at the same time as the 300/4.

Hmmm. Why yes. Canon is planning replacements for all three lenses. All will be twice as good at half the rebate price.

Oh wait. . I have that wrong. They will be half as good at twice the price.

No. . . still not quite right. . .. they will just be having a NEW rebate announced TOMORROW.

. . .

Please. . . do you know how inane the question reads? Bottom line: Rebates will come and go. You miss this one. . wait three monthes for the next one. Yes. .there is a major show coming in March. Expect preannouncements in February. If the future is like the future: figure on a 20D replacement, an EF-S zoom, and one other lens.

On the rumour of the the 50L- there's a second rumour now that was posted on an oriental site stating something of a 55 f1.2L IS. So now there's this rumour too. It will be rather expensive I would guess especially if it has IS. Some have said the new lens may not be far off the price of where the 85L is at.

What EF-S zoom would you have in mind? 10-85mm is already covered by two EF-S zooms, and I couldn't imagine Canon being interested in developing an EF-S specific zoom for any longer focal lengths. As far as I know, the difference in build, etc. for an EF-S 70-300 vs. an EF 70-300 would be minor.
