What is Kodak Safety Film 5063

I know this has been asked before, but the caches and old links aren't working.

 

I bought a bulk loader on ebay and it came full of unexposed Kodak Safety Film 5063. It

seems to be about 400 speed. Anybody know more?

Google is your friend- "Kodak 5063" and you'll get Tri-X.

Quite right- google is my friend. However a google search for "kodak 5063" doesn't yield a

5063=tri-x explanation. Try it.

"Safety film" refers to acetate base, which while not as hazardous as nitrate base, can deteriorate in storage; plan accordingly. The emulsion on film with that edge marking is probably from the 1970s to 1980s, and will have lost some speed while gaining fog; you may need to adjust your metering and development to compensate, if you want to try to use the film. I find HC-110 works very well with old film because it has a very strong restrainer that keeps fog down.

Sorry, my bad. I spend so much time trying to get people to use quotes for phrases, I slipped up and stuck 'em in. Just Googling the two words without the quotes (how I did it originally) gives several references on the first search page.

In case you're wondering, 6043 is (was) the code for the 120-size Tri-X Pan.
