EricM
It is funky isn't it? I have more burried somewhere from the same episode. Can't remeebr if it was from a dvd or hard drive now either. But the best stuff Craig? Think I'm diggin the sense of humour. I can't/wont post alot of material that i'm paid to take. Not that it's super high top secret level 5 clearance, it's just that posting here wouldn't be appreciated, nor have i asked, by my clients. Non of it is Leica content or Leica style anyway. Besides, I can't even post some of my best most valuable stuff on my own site. Some people/companies just don't want it hanging in cyber. Which is fine, I apprecaite that. You consequently only get to see my snaps on my own time. Albert, are you using the nikon software with the scanner? You're right, the vuescan is much better from what i have heard. Rene, it already is happening. If you're running an older D70 without the current firmware upgrade (D70s), you can't open it in CS2. You have to get the firmware upgrade or an older copy of CS and be able to find the plugin. Bizarre eh?
david k.
I have been hearing these horror stories from the software guys at work for years, and because I shoot film only, I really don't give it a lot of thought. But reading a thread like this is scarring the daylights outa me. Well, I guess I'll never get to print my 100 year old negs, but the fact that someone will be able to, is starting to seem like a revelation. I am talking about archivaled B&W negs, not C41 from one hour photo :)
EricM
David, the only thing they'll be doing with negs in a hundred years is holding them up to a strong light source and going "kull man, check it out."
Brad_
<I>But reading a thread like this is scarring the daylights outa me.</i><P> People that really care about their images, whether digital or film, have taken the right measures. There's nothing to be scared of. I sleep well at night... www.citysnaps.net

al_kaplan1
David, it's not likely that any of us will be able to print their hundred year old negatives themselves but I'm still printing 40+ year old negatives and my great, great grandchildren can make their own decision about whether or not to print any of my hundred year old negatives. EricM
There won't even paper in a hundred years.
f_thaon
nobody will be interested in "images" at all. archiving your little precious images is quite a waste of time. the culture is rapidly devolving and nobody will give a ++++ about the past. so those of you who sleep well at night because you have multiple backups are simply deluded. no one will care. it is the brave new world, the defining characteristic therof is no interest in the past. read the daily news. al_kaplan1
No paper? I guess that's why you can't buy oil and water color paints, charcoal sticks, canvas, and various drawing and watercolor papers? No more sable brushes? Vancouver sure must be a strange place, with government mandates on only using the very latest in hi-tech. What's the penality these days for posession of Tri-X or Rodinal? I strongly suspect that silver based printing materials will still be around a century hence fo those who still care to do conventional old fashioned photography. EricM
You're gravely naive if you think this century will provide the same frivolous consumption of the last.
kipling
if someone wants to shell out enough cash they'll always be able to buy what they want or need. you can buy hand made fire starting sets that come with a flint stone, a striking iron and a little ball of dried cotton in a leather pouch made of a goats bag. i know a guy who will sell you as many as you want. useless outdated stuff seems to sell quite well in europe, so i don't see a reason why film equipment would just disapear if a handfull of people still want to use it. david k.
Brad: "Hmmm... Curious, who do you think will be wanting to print your images 100 years from now? And how is it a revelation?" The first time a saw a collection (approx 100 prints) of Walker Evans work from the 1930's, I considered it a revelation, very moving, a look at a different time. Who will to print my negs 100 years from now? I would hope one of my sons, or grandchildren or whatever family member......someone who wants to see what the "60's, 70's, etc, looked like. john_wire
Hmmmm... boxed and sleeved Kodachromes, 35's and 120's in the storage drawers. Damn.... I forgot to backup the Leica film last week. PS Two backup CD's failed last month. I rescanned the negatives for the images I wanted. FILM RULES!......... and especially Kodachrome! Peace. Regards. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! EricM
that's funny... DVD's can get wet and still work, negs and slides would be a pain to restore, and hard drives...not so sure about them.
Brad_
You have one or more HDs off-site. Much better than single negs. www.citysnaps.net
EricM
oh yeah without a doubt, and the next step wuold be to have online storage incase the whole province fell into the ocean, and of course dog paddled until picked up.
Brad_
I have 900 GB of backup storage. Wonder what it would cost to rent that online? Not being the trusting type, I'd want two online services. Just checked GoDaddy.com hosting. Their Premium plan offers 20GB for $18/month. Think I'll stay with my own HDs for now. You do get 2,000 email accounts with that though. www.citysnaps.net
EricM
for now, yeah. businesses in greater numbers will be demanding it soon. wont be long before there's another folder on your explorer tree networked/ftp'd or whatever to off site storage. what else is there for people and business to do? keep it at home? the digital archiving that people will have in five years time, ten years from now will be emmence. and to compound things, soon all computers will be entertainment devices, an interface to the tv and stereo. where are they going to put all that? keep buying 300 gig hard drives? no. virtual personal libraries. you heard it here first. :P
buttons_de_ridder
Always similar argumentation on the DMR vs. analog theme. Who cares what one does or shoots as long as long as it makes your heart beat happily. I by far prefer filling a 10cc seringe with rodinal, getting the water temp. right, mixing and filling and shaking etc. to sitting behind my screen and mousily manipulating pictures up to a level which I never intentionally wanted to shoot anyway, but this is a very subjective thought..... whatever gets you through the night/whatever puts a smile on your face I'd say.
