You see im going to purchase a new camera (maybe) and my first choise would be the canon eos5d but now im wondering if i should stick to the d200 (wich is cheaper) a use the rest of the money on a great lens, but im not in to the nikon lens series. any ideas jepper
peter_burns1
Yes it is the same lens. The D200 is a fantastic exciting piece of kit that is very well built and great to hold with it's compact size, I have mine and love it.
jim_gifford
For about the price of the EOS5D, you could get... D200 body 12-24 f/4 AF-G Nikkor zoom 35 f/2 AF-D Nikkor (for a "standard" lens) 85 f/1.8 AF-D Nikkor ... and an SB800 speedlight flash Just a thought. The Canon is lovely too, and some people find the 24mm-by-36mm sensor to be worth the premium. Be well,
fourfa
Jim, either you have access to unbelievable Nikon prices, or you're seriously sandbagging the 5D price. I take your point but it's a little exaggerated.

Unfortunately my lens colllection is in Nikkors, not Canon lenses, so I don't have that option. So again I ask:
Why? Why Nikon? Why won't you make a full format dSLR?
If one more generation of camneras passes without one, I will be forced to sell all my Nikon stuff and buy a Canon. ShunCheung
There is only one 18-70mm DX kit lens so far, the one originally introduced with the D70 in February, 2004. It is a fairly good lens but has serious barrel distortion at 18mm. The EOS 5D is about $3300 while the D200 is $1700. The chance is that you can get better deals for either one. But the price difference can easily cover the excellent 17-55mm/f2.8 DX zoom plus an SB-800 flash. To me, the choice is very easy, but some people have firm believes in the 24x36mm sensor size. klix
same lens, but it seems a shame to put an 18-70mm on a D200. With that body, get one of the constant f2.8 zooms KL
fourfa
5D is $3000 at B&H (though no doubt the D200 will drop some in the future as well). again, no N vs C flames here, but let's please keep this comparison fair.
jim_gifford
<<Jim, either you have access to unbelievable Nikon prices, or you're seriously sandbagging the 5D price. I take your point but it's a little exaggerated.>> You can put all that Nikon gear in your cart at B&H for about $3525.00, and I had though the EOS 5D was selling for $3,500.00. I was in error on the latter point -- the 5D is only $3,300.00 today at B&H. Whoever said the 5D is $3,000.00 could make some friends in Canon land by pointing to where that deal is today. fourfa
add the 5D to your cart and it's $3000 at both B&H and Adorama. Dell has a periodic 15% deal that gets you a 5D for $2700. The Canon folks know all about it. I'm not on a rant here, just trying to keep us from fooling ourselves

dan_brown14
Where did you see the D200 with the 18-70? I believe you are mistaken. The D200s sold thus far are lens-less. The new lens is the 18-200 VR something or other, that is most likely "the" D200 lens. However, in my opinion, "the" d200 lens is the 17-55/2.8 and the 70-200/2.8. danielho
Yes, I would think that the 18-70 lens is the same zoom that is often kitted with the D70(s). It is a very nice piece of glass and at a great price. Nothing to be ashamed of here.
The new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18 - 200 mm f/3.5-5.6G DX ED VR (whew, what a mouthful!) is often seen paired with the D200. I haven't played with this long enough to know all its ins and outs but do have one on order based my intial impressions from a friend's sample. Yes, I think it is THAT good. I have great expectations for this lens. There are some good reviews online that you could Google.
As for D200 or 5D, there is obviously the price and sensor size issue. However, if neither of these issue are deal breakers...and you don't have an investment in a lot of glass for either system, I'd wait until the D200 is widely available and play with both systems. This way you can see which camera works better for you.
These days, it really isn't the equipment that is the limiting factor in creating great photographs.
Have fun shopping and enjoy whatever you decide upon.
