Buying a 20D

I have finally set my sights on buying the Canon 20D DSLR. My

reasons are there is not a huge differance in the 20D vs. the 30D.

and secondly the 30D should cause the prices to drop.

What I am wondering is if anyone know weather or not the proces on

the 20D's will drop any further, and if so by how much? When is the

best time to buy?

OR... if anyone is looking to sell their 20D I would be interested

in talking :)

Sure, the price will drop someday. Nobody knows exactly when, though.

When you're ready to use it. Sounds like you are, so quit typing and pull the trigger already!

I'll be keeping my 20D for quite some time, sorry.

The price of the 20D has fallen by about 33% in the UK over the last 12 months. I expect that trend may well continue.

However, I think that it's probably better to buy it now and then ignore the price. Get the thing and have fun with it.

Hope this helps

Jason,

As Peter suggests, buying now gives you pleasure instead of frustration. Waiting to buy new could mean the purchase of a returned or refurbished unit. If money is a large concern, consider purchasing a used one as techno freaks dump their little used equipment and rush to keep on the cutting edge.

My 20D isn't for sale either and neither are my 10Ds ;-)

Hah!

Timing is critical. . as supplies WILL run out! Although. . I do note that B&H does still have 10D's available NEW for $800. So that is a floor.

Also. . .at this point, I would just wait a month or two after the 30D is out. Note that at that point. . .the 30D will probably start to fall in price.

I doubt that the 20D will fall as low as the 10D, since it's feature set is much closer to the new 30D's than the 10D was to the 20D. So I think the floor is higher than $800 for new units; probably more like $1,000.

If I were in the market for a new dSLR and was considering the 20D, I'd go ahead and save the additional $$ for the 30D. On the other hand, I have a 20D now, and the 30D doesn't offer enough incremental benefit to induce me to upgrade.

THe 30D has a 2.5" LCD and I need the bigger picture. The whole idea with digital is that you can see if you got the shot. So I think the upgrade is worth it. But with the rebate on the 5D comming up next month I think I'll wait.($300?) Regards, Bill

I feel the need for two bodies, so I have been keeping on generation old as a backup or "short lens" body. I just sold my 10D in anticipation of buying the 30D and expect to keep my 20D until after the next body comes out or I can justify a 1 series.

BTW, my 10D with battery grip sold on eBay for $760 and I was told the used 20D is going for $800 body only. I am blown away at how well these cameras are holding thier value.

For me the big plus for the 30D is more frames captured in the buffer, and 1/3 stop ISO settings. That will be so sweet.

Dell had a coupon special (pointed out on techbargains.com) a few days ago, for 20% off of a 20D body, which brought the price down to about $1050. The coupon was good for only so many uses, so I imagine that they are all used up, already.

In any event, I ordered a lens from Dell last year, when they had one of these sales, and then ended up waiting several MONTHS for delivery. Fortunately, the price of the lens didn't fall below what I paid Dell for it in the general market, before I finally got delivery.

I find that my experience with Dell's Canon camera equipment specials is not isolated, so if you intend to get something from them, be prepared to wait for a loooong time (or not -- it's all a crap shoot with them, and I thought that online gambling was illegal 8-).

I got my 20D body from a local retailer that matched Ritz' online price at the time (because there was a local Ritz retail outfit -- go figure), for about $1250, and that was last Fall, during the triple-rebate period. After also picking up a prime lens, and a Canon Pixma printer (for my wife's use with her SuperCCD Fuji digicam), I just received my rebate check for $420, which I immediately sunk into an EFS 10-22, this time from B&H (I'm sure Canon meant for that to happen 8-).

Point being, there's no time like the present, if you intend to use the stuff. I've shot more images with my digital cameras over the last three years than all the stuff I shot on film before. It's been wonderful.

Have fun...
