bob_hollifield
Hello...I have a young neice planning to attend Northumbria University this fall in Newcastle England. She has an interest in fashion photography. Anyone have any knowledge of how the photography program or degree is rated or regarded? Thanks for your input in advance. bob_hollifield
Hi, that's nice, but I'm afraid I don't know anything about that university.
grant_lupton1
Dear Bob, I'm afraid I can't help on specifics. However, it may be an idea to compare the course content for Northumbria with other universities and see where the emphases lie - theory/practical, continual assessment or final examination, ordinary or honours, post-graduate studies, contact (formal or informal) with professionals/companies, etc (etc means I can't think of anything further) . Other universities or colleges may reflect more closely your niece's interests and preferences. Assuming she's in the UK, she should have time to change to another university (interviews for admission continue through August, maybe later). Could I suggest something radical? A degree in fashion design. She'll be twenty-one (I assume) when she graduates, with plenty of time to learn photography in due course. Then she can be a fashion writer/journalist and photographer. I'm only guessing but I suspect fashion photography is a cut-throat area - witness the fashion shows. The photographers are not gentleman (and much less ladies), and doubtless there is a lot of competition from aspirants. Moreover, I would suggest a degree in fashion is more respected than a degree in photography, at least in the UK. Get your niece to make a few calls (or write or e-mail) to fashion magazines to enquire re graduate/trainee entry, different departments as well as photography, and qualification requirements. She could also do the same with professional photographers (they're usually credited in the magazine fashion shoots). A final word if I may, Bob. Let your niece do all the work. Good luck. Grant. bob_hollifield
Grant, thanks for your thoughtful answer. I agree, a degree in fashion design would lend itself to several avenues of employment, including a good background for photography. I will forward these emails to her and let her investigate further. Thanks again...bob
bill_thorlin
Cannot help on the choice of which degree course but from what I gather from the "University Set", Newcastle would be definitely one of the places to go to ( their grapevine is very alive ).
