"King Kong" Rangefinder

Recommended Posts

Finally have "Kong" working after extensive cleaning and repairs

(never believe what a seller says on Ebabe). Found some old

Ektachrome (dated 04/1997) and took some pix. I haven't used

Ektachrome before so can't tell if film was a problem or if this is

how it looks normally. The lens is a 210 Xenar w/o a shutter and it

fits inside when "Kong" is closed (the rangefinder, after adjusting,

is accurate throughout the range down to about 6-7 feet). Will an

old "Speed" ever be obsolete?

Hi John! Cool camera! Nice to see someone local......Pic is of the Whaleback in Duluth/Superior...right? My wife is from Duluth, so I am there at least 6x year...FABULOUS place to take pics......Camera seems like a very nice restoration!

Thanks Pico, too bad junior never "grew up". I think he "morphed" into a MF Fuji or Mamiya rangefinder.

Hi John, the box says EPP and the film says 1771. I can never get things "right" on this laptop LCD. I have to print it out and look at it for awhile in daylight. I have some fresh Astia 100 loaded in the Grafmatic now, so I'll soon see how things look. Regards.

Yes John, believe it or not I actually do know where "Herbster" is! (I live in central Wisconsin).....

Keeping within the parameters of classic cameras, First Photo in Duluth actually has a nice collection above their display counter...Quite a number actually......

Thanks Robert.

I was having "fits" adjusting the rangefinder at the limits for the old Schneider 210 Xenar until I removed the prism and polished it's shaft. Now I can use the rangefinder for distances from 6-8 feet out to infinity.

I'm sure there is some focus shift with different f stops but it hasn't been an apparent problem so far after careful examination of the negative with the lens stopped down to more than f8. The shutterless Xenar folds up inside the case and the camera focal plane shutter works fine after a little tweaking (true speeds up to 1/1000 and fast film takes care of some handholding "shake"). With a couple of handy Grafmatics "Kong" can now operate as a true rangefinder (with limitations of course). GRIN.

Let's see now........ how many Mpixies is that 4x5 worth? At last, the old much maligned 4870 can do a half way decent job.... right?

Regards.
