photoinnature
Dear all, I am making a sudden visit to Salzburg and Vienna for a week. I was wondering what I could photograph in the Nature of Salzburg and/or in the areas nearby. Anybody from there or anybody familiar of that place? Can I still expect fall color there? In fact, it is my third visit there but have never been in this time of year. Many thanks you all in advance. www.nature-photography.biz
john_wintheiser
In October temporary wine bars called Heuriger pop up all over the Vienna area. These would be excellent places for people photography.

michael_linn
Yes, you can expect some fall color. Bring you polarizing filter but don't expect to use it much! My experience in Austria in October and November has been very damp and gloomy. That is only a challenge for the true photographer, who will find opportunities that are subtle, rather than dramatic. If shooting film, I would recommend something with higher contrast and saturation than you might use in bright sunlight. Have great visit, and enjoy the wine! kaiblanke
I live near / in the alps for the last 7 years and did a lot of nature photography during that time as well: Fall color is currently at its peak right now, but it can get gloomier every day. There will be not much of foilage above 1000m and I would not count on great fall foilage generally, but this year the colours stay quite long and are pretty beautiful.
But there are numerous nice places around below that mark that have wonderful views and would be nice to photograph even in the worst weather: From Salzburg go either east towards Berchtesgaden, where you have a great view on the Watzmann and the Knigssee, alternatively go west to the lake Chiemsee where the islands Frauenchiemsee and Herrenchiemsee are well worth a visit: The lunatic Bavarian King Ludwig II. built one of its phantastic castles on them. On top of the Kampenwand above the lake Chiemsee you will have great rock walls and a wonderful view on both the alps and the Chiemsee. The 'Wilder Kaiser' is just south of this area and a szenery of numerous movies. Both are among the best views this side of the alps without climbing any mountain.
If you head south from Salzburg, you will find pure mountain szenery - and if you take the train up the Dachstein, you will overlook all the mountains around including the glacier. marcus_erne
The city of Salzburg has plenty to photograph. Many historical buildings and memorials. If you go up to the castle you have a great view across the valley and town. Mozart's house and birthplace can also be seen. Somewhere nearby are some icecaves, but I forgot the exact location. Naturewise you need to move around and away from the cultivated areas; so you must be flexible and have a car at your disposal. I am not sure how much you can acomplish in a short period of time? I have not been to Vienna myself yet, but it also has plenty t offer. A good location for all angles of street photography.
