walter_pieringer
The shutter release on my Bronica SQ-AI is inconsistent. Sometimes it fires fine, other times it won't fire at all. Today, for example, it was working fine, and then I pressed the shutter release button 5 times in a row, and on the 5th press it actually took a photo. Then it worked fine again, then took two presses to work. It has brand-new batteries, and it has this problem with multiple lenses. Any ideas? Uncle Goose
Probably a bad contact, let a repairman take a look at it, might need a new button or new wiring.
LenMarriott
Walter, How does it perform if you use a cable release? This info might help a repairman diagnose the problem. Another SQ Ai user, best, LM.
david_richert
Make sure the battery contacts are clean and the door is firmly closed. On one of my two SQA-I's this is a problem I have shimed and taped the door closed.
neil_forster
i had similar problem with both my sqai bodies- fortunately it is probably quite easy to fix if you want, the bottom of the camera body comes off by undoing the screws on the bottom and 2 screws hidden under the vinyl patch- lift this with a pin, the bottom comes off- dont lose a tiny plastic pin from the bottom plate, under is the contacts- 2 silver tabs- contact the battery box- clean and lift up, the shutter contacts are the block of 3 gold contacts- easy to see by pressing shutter- may need cleaning or re positioning to fine tune release position, also clean contacts in battery box. takes maybe 5mins, i've done 3 now, all had similar dodgy contacts with battery box or shutter release position off, email if get stuck. neil_forster
david- this is why you have to shim door to get contacts to work- just need to clean and lift silver tabs inside, i used to have same problem, only 5 screws to remove....... andre_noble3
Neil, I just discovered a similar problem with new SQ-Ai. Will give it a try what tools needed?
neil_forster
just need a cross point screwdriver to fit the screws on bottom plate- all the same size, a pin to lift the vinyl patch- use the point to lift an edge to remove it- its self adhesive, and something to clean contacts- switch cleaner/isopropyl alcohol. the bottom plate contains the battery box which contacts 2 spring tabs under- these need cleaning and slightly lifted up. there is a plastic pin near the gold contact for motordrive make a note of correct way round and dont lose the pin as it comes loose when bottom plate off. shutter contacts (three gold leaves) can be cleaned in situ or removed with a finer crosspoint to bend to adjust firing point,
andre_noble3
Neil if you're still following this thread, I located two screws on bottom of body, and removed them. But I am not sure where the vinyl patch is located that you're referring too. Is it the two that are located, one on each SIDE of the body, or is the vinyl patch somewhere on the underside? BTW Tamron has a manual and exploded views for this SQ-Ai. I have copy of each, but admittedly not the definitive expert still on reading the exploded views. neil_forster
andre- i'll take it from step 1- looking at bottom plate- 3 screws obvious: 1. right of serial no., 2, above battery door release, 3. top right near 9 gold pins, vinyl patch is actually the grid textured bit- rectangle around tripod mount- i thought this was a molding but its actually a self adhesice patch- lift this by using a pin under the edge and remove last 2 screws and plate will come off. if need more intructions let me know
andre_noble4
Neil, thanks for taking the time. I have gotten busy, but will take this repair project up soon with the help of your detailed instructions.
andre_noble4
'twas the battery holder. There are 4 silver tabs on the inderside of the holder. I pulled out the tab just a tad by removing the two etremely small set screws connecting the silver tab to the plastic of the holder. I then bent the silver tab outward by hand and screwed it back into the holder with 2 set screws. I did only the tab at the location which Neil refers to as the shutter contact position - the one on the end. I decided to focus on the battery holder after trying Neil's detailed solution above , which in my case turned out not to be the only cause of the intermittant firing. Fixing the two in conjunction solved my problem.
