jun_park
I'd like to give this man a good word and share with you. I found this man, David Lau, from PN and Harry's pro shop and been meaning to use him and I did just that today. I serviced my 35mm 4th cron and M3 and cost very little. It was a minor job though. I asked him how much to CLA IIIf and he said $120 to $150 CDN. I told him that it cost me $330 CDN with Gerry Smith at Kindermann. In fact, when he worked at Wild Leitz Company back in 79 in Toronto, he trained Gerry then and stayed till mid 90's until the company closed. He still repair Leica, Hasselblad etc in his home in Toronto and without the overhead cost. I think we should take advantage of his good work and low price. David is as good or better than Gerry at less than half the price.
victorm.
Thanks for the tip. I paid $390 to Kindermann for a cla on my IIIf and wasn't too happy (slight damage to the vulcanite, rangefinder slightly out vertically, etc.). Unfortunately, I was so busy at my new day-job, I didn't have the time or energy to pursue my complaints. David gave me his business card several years ago when I was introduced to him at the now defunct Pro-Lab on Carlaw Ave. Of course, I lost it. bernard_frank
But did you have a complete CLA done on a Leica by this man yet or just this "minor job"? I suggest you do that first before claiming he is "as good or better" than Gerry Smith" at less than half the price". You know, just to make sure he's not just half-as-good. david k.
Jun, your right in everything you say other than you have a typo, David's last name is Yau. I have used David for years, he can work on almost anything but is trained on both Leica and Hasselblad. He does most of his work for the camera stores around the city. David K. david k.
Jun, I still think that Gerry Smith has more experience on M series bodies, when David worked with Gerry at Leica, David specialised more in SLR bodies. David K.
john_boyle3
Gerry Smith did a CLA on both my M2 and M4 as well as two lenses. His work was excellent, the price was reasonable and no one could have done a better job. While David Lau may also do excellent work it is no reason to attempt to downgrade that done by Gerry. If I ever get another Leica that needs some work it will certainly go to Gerry.
jun_park
Sorry about the typo. His name is David Yau. This is not to dabate who's better, Gerry or David, but suggesting repairing can be done at the low price. You can always pay more and get it fixed. No problem here. I don't have to prove anything that he is as good or better than Gerry. I meant he have years of experience repairing Leica. I'm just happy that I pay little to get it repaired and I could've paid less to CLA on my IIIf. I'm just sharing my thought, that's all. He did a free paint job-missing a white dot- on my 90mm lens while I wait. The choice is always yours. You can always pay more.
Ian Taylor
You know, just to make sure he's not just half-as-good.
He comes highly recommended by Brian at Harry's Pro Shop. That's enough to convince me.
monochrome11
weird - could have sworn i posted to this thread yesterday to add my 2 cents worth in and confirm that David's work is top notch.. also to point out that his name is Yau not Lau ;P was it deleted for any particular reason? MTC Photography
Kindermann keeps an inventory worth several hundred thousand dollars of original Leica parts dated back to the 30s.
