Regarding Helsinki:

The fall colours haven't made an appearance yet, but as soon as there's a bit of frost during the night the leafy trees, especially maple, should put on a good show.

If you keep your eyes open you'll see plenty of detail in buildings, e.g. go hunting for Jugendstil apartment blocks. Unfortunately there are many hidden beauties in courtyards and staircases which you won't have easy access to. Be sure to visit both the Lutheran and Orthodox cathedrals inside, as well as the University library.

Visit Porvoo (an old town 1 hour away by bus) on a nice day, and Suomenlinna fortress (15 minute ferry ride from the marketplace). A propos marketplace, the most vibrant colours of vegetables, berries and mushrooms may already be over, but both the outdoor and indoor markets are easy to visit anyway.

In case you're into modern architecture, see Otaniemi University campus (Alvar Aalto design) in Espoo (20 minute bus ride) and see if you can combine the mass of red brick with the autumn leaves.

If you see any rust, complain to the city authorities that they aren't doing their job ;-)

Pray for non-rainy days.
