Bogen 410 vs Acratech

Friends, I am looking for a tripod head to replace the pistol style

Bogen I have now. While it worked well for my lightweight 35mm, my

Rollei 6008i totally overwhelms it. I can not tilt it even to 45

degress before it flops over. I am torn between the Acratech ballhead

and the geared Bogen 410. Those who use the first like its light

weight and the total flexibily in all planes. And those who like the

Bogen reccommend it for the fine tuning that can be done by adjusting

each plane independently. But it is considerably heavier, if I am not

mistaken. As for my shooting, it is principally

nature/landscape/architecture. That would favor the Bogen. But I also

haul my gear into the mountains and travel with it as well, which

would favor the Acratech and its light weight. I do not shoot

wildlife, though I do shoot moving sail boats, which would favor the

Bogen. Realizing that there is no one perfect solution, I would

particularly like to hear from anyone who has lived with both the

Bogen and Acratech (or similar ball head). Frankly, I tend to favor

the Bogen, but want to know if it can be adjusted as quickly as a

ballhead once you get to know it. Finally, are there particular

camera plates that work especially well with either of these heads

and my Rollei. I have heard good things about the Really Right Stuuf

products, but do not undestand why or how there could be great

differences among these plates. Many thanks.

I am using the Bogen 410 but also have other ball head for ball head application. I shoot up to 45

Weight is not in favor of any head that is steady enough for MF cameras.

If you are concerned about the slowness of turning the gear to level the camera there is a quick release feature on the 410 that disengage the gears for quick adjustments.

I use that to coarsely set up my camera level and use the gear to fine tune it but the grid lines on the focusing screen

Hope that helps

these seem like the polar opposites of each other. the 410 head would be splendid for your rollei 6008 for the type of work you do, but for 35mm, bogen doesn't make anti-rotation plates for the RC4 system. I just sold the 410 I have-- I shoot 6x6 and 35mm and found the 410 was only being used for 6x6. it weighs about 2.75 lbs also.
