Weekend in Edinburgh

In the middle of September I will be in Scotland for a weekend. I will be flying in and out of

Edinburgh and I am interested in making the best use of the short time I will be there to

do some photography.

I like to photograph landscapes and ruins of buildings but I am not sure how far from

Edinburgh I would need to travel to get some interesting landscapes. I could just stay in

Edinburgh and do some street photography but that seems to easy and boring.

Any suggestions for how I can best spend these 2 days would be appreciated

Hi, I had the pleasure of going to Edinburgh back in the mid 80's, and it was great. I recommend you check out the Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and there is also a tall Spire on Princess St(Scott Monument), just outside of the Waverly Train Station, good views of the city from the top(very narrow up there). Also check and see if the Edinburgh Miitary Tattoo is being performed, a must see. The Castle is center city and is quite interesting. There are some other Castles in the area, and there are many old Churches/Cathedrals also. Good luck and have fun.

Will you have a car? If you don't then staying round Edinburgh will be a lot more productive. If you will have a car then the closest touches of "real" Scottish scenery lie in the Trossachs , an area of hills and lochs north of Glasgow, but accessible from Edinburgh in about an hour via Stirling and then Callender or Aberfoyle.

Its possible to be more ambitious than this for a full day trip, but maybe you can say whether you will be driving.

Hi Ed

I live in Edinburgh, so I can give you some pointers.

Festival, Tattoo etc - all over by mid September.

Buildings - the centre of Edinburgh is quite small and easy to walk round. You have the old and new towns, complete with Castle, Palace, stacks of old churches (12th century onwards) and other buildings.

Ruins - St Anthony's chapel in the Queen's Park (AKA Arthur's Seat), Craigmillar Castle is sort of ruins. Out of Edinburgh there are other old castles and palaces.

Landscape - not a huge amount in my opinion (watch the flame war from other Edinburgh based photographers!!). Various parks etc in and close to Edinburgh, but 'proper' landscape is out of Edinburgh as others have suggested.

Feel free to email me if you'd like more details etc. I'd be glad to help.

Cheers!

Ed, the east coast down from Edinburgh is quite photogenic in places, try

Dirleton Castle, Tantallon Castle, Dunbar, etc. Also, just across the Forth

Estuary, there is Fife, with plenty of interesting little villages, like Culross, with

its Abbey and old buildings and others like Crail, with its harbour and St

Andrews, Old Course, Castle & Cathedral; good views from old tower in

cathedral grounds.

If you have a car and are free to travel, you could drive as far as you like, Glen

Coe would be well within reach of Edinburgh, as would Loch Lomond, the

Trossachs, Perthshire, Cairngorms, Royal Deeside, Stirling & Ochils, Wallace

Monument, etc, plus of course the Falkirk Wheel ( device connecting two

canals), which is quite something to see. In September there will still be a bit

of colour on the mountainsides from the heather and a few autumn colours

starting to show through.
