larry schaefer - chicago,
If authorized by Lisa it would be interesting to see a follow up post to this one and some results of the salvage efforts.
lisa_c5
I wrote a long response this am, but i don't see it posted, so here's another :) Thank you all for magnitude of your generosity! I will definitely be taking you up on your offers to help. I'll spend the next couple of evenings sorting through the pics and figuring out which shots are the most important. How many? I have ~30 "photo ideas" which need fixing - for example, say I have 6 bridemaids photos but they're all flawed in different ways, I'd like 1 "photo idea" of 1 good bridesmaid photo. I also have a 3 or so very good and crisp photos - for example our cake has a couple of very lovely pictures which don't need altering. And I have many more pics which i think will just remain candid-looking shots and not worth trying to restore. A bit more on what happened: The photographer told me that she used that same camera for a baptism the week before without incident. Originally she thought the problem was with the developing company she sent her film to - something with the film roller scraping the picture off the film to cause the black mark. The developing company denied it, so she took her camera to a repair place. They said there was something wrong with the mirror, which he had never seen or heard of happening before. The error occurred to all the rolls of film and pics, and did not occur during the shoot. I never considered having a second camera or camera person as crucial, when i was looking for photographers. That's my fault, and I know better now. We seriously considered getting a lawyer, but she refunded our payment, and we thought it would cost more to hire a lawyer than what we could get towards paying to fix up the family-taken photos. She doesn't use digital, so I don't think she has any experience to offer helping us to fix up family-taken photos. My husband and I also extensively discussed dressing up again for a staged photo shoot - we decided it would be too difficult and expensive because most of our bridal party are from out of state (from florida to oregon), and we wouldn't be able to recaputure the ceremony. Thank you again for all of your offers to help. I'll be contacting you soon!
ptucci
I'll fix 5--send it to ptocci at indy.rr dot com. Was the photographer an established one, or just starting out? Was she priced on the low end?

markgooding
Lisa - I hope you are pleased with the results of people editing. It must have been very upsetting for you. Whilst not having a second camera is indefensible, I would like to stick up for the photographer a little. I've had a camera which broke such that the mirror and the shutter weren't properly sync'd and ended up with half photos. The photographer may well be telling the truth on that front. tripanfal
Lisa, I would be happy to fix a few if you e-mail them to me. I'm so sorry to hear of your misfortune. What you could do is take your favorite 1 or 2 shots and post them in the retouching forum at dpreview.com http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1006 I would not overload them with many, but everyone there would be happy to help with your 1 or 2 favorites. Peple jump at the chance to show off thier talents feel free to e-mail me a few and I will do may best. -Chris
