Hi

I own a Canon Eos Rebel G and have a chance to purchase a sigma 75-300

Macro Zoom lens. Would this be a suitable zoom lens to purchase and

what should I be willing to pay....it is not brand new. Any other

suggestions welcome. I am a novice photographer....like sports and nature.

Thanks

Gareth W.

The lens itself is a consumer grade cheap zoom. The macro function is 1:2 lifesize. Nothing special about th lens, but it works. My girlfriend has the Quantaray (made by Sigma) version. It was $159 new. I would be careful buying it used. If you know the seller, and trust them, maybe you can get a good price on it. I wouldn't pay more than $100 for it unless it is in mint condition.

Attached is a quick macro picture I took when she got it. I was curios how it compared to the Canon 100 f/2.8 macro. (it didn't) It's just o.k...Kind of soft. Like I said, nothing special, but if it's what you can afford, go for it.

If you're on eBay, get off it right now. Take a deep breath and forget about this for a moment. Get back on the train of thoughts only if you figure out what your goal is in the new lens purchase. Every lens is "Suitable" to purchase for one reason or another, but only you can wisely make that definition, IMHO.

If you're going with sports and nature to start out, I'd highly recommend Nikon 80-200 f2.8 AF-D, or a 180 f2.8 AF-D and extension tubes for close ups.

Just my 2 cents. YMMV.

These AF Nikon lenses are fine lenses but they won't do you much good on a Canon body. The equivalent lenses for Canon are quite expensive even used, much more than the Nikon ones. The point is well taken though, getting a sports lens and then using extension tubes to get into macro range. Something I have never tried.

For a novice it is fine but even my nephew grew tired of it after a while. Don't pay more than $100.

The next best zoom would be the Canon EF 100-300 4.5-5.6
