Contax lens cap....

Is there some sort of generic lens cap for the rear of the 50mm-f/1.5

Opton Sonnar lens??? (Post war Contax IIa). I see all kinds of caps

for the larger mount lenses but nothing for the small mount 50's.

Have a hard time placing it in my bag when changing lenses as the

rear element is really vulnerable.

Yes, there are rear lens caps, but they have fallen into the realm of collector items. Ritz Camera has a bunch, under "Nikon RF Accessories", called 50mm RF rear caps at $59 each to $75 each.

 

Now, I have cut off pill plastic bottles for makeshift caps.

 

Yes, I empathize with you, for how inconvenient not having caps is for that type of lens.

There are Zeiss and generics from the 50's and 60's but more practical are the Soviet made ones for the Jupiter 8 and 3 etc. Why don't you email one of the many FSU dealers selling Kievs on EBay.

Not sure if it'll work on your post-war 50/1.5, but I use a film canister cap as a rear cap for my Kiev's Jupiter: fits like it was made for it.

Eugene, which cap do you use? I've tried Kodak, Fuji and Agfa as available in the USA but none worked. The Kodak came closest but ultimately no go on J-8 and a variety of East and West German Sonnars (both f1.5 and f2).

B&H sells generic 34mm slip-on plastic caps that work fine.

before i found the elusive rear cap, along with the just as elusive body cap, I managed by going through empty pill containers and cutting them to size with an exacto knife...not pretty but it works...

I suppose I get laughed at whenever I suggest this but so be it; there are all kinds of useful caps available that we throw away every day. Caps from McCormick's herbs and spices will exactly fit a 42mm lens bezel. A cap for my Foth Derby came from a prescription pill bottle. A protector for the rear of a friend's 21 SA was made from a plastic film cannister. I partilularly like the ones from the condiments as they are colorful and unlikely to be forgotten, but easily replacible if lost. I think the problem is that many who call themselves 'users' are secret fondlers who constantly seek the 'appropriate' or 'correct' accessory. Unfortunately it is getting to the point that they are going to have to pay the price because the collectors (read 'fondlers') are driving the prices beyond all reasonable limits.

Michael, I used one from the Konica film canister I think (Centuria 1600).
