"Mom and Pop" Stores

I recently got to enjoy Stephen Shore's "Uncommon Places", an excellent

collection of images of those forgotten little corners of the U.S. and Canada.

The photographs were all made between 1974 and 1979 and it struck me how it was

NOT the chain stores that dominated the high streets in those days, but rather

the "Mom and Pop" traditional, small businesses. Where I live in Massachusetts,

the number of these "Mom and Pop" stores is dwindling as more and more of them

seem to go out of business and get replaced by the kind of chain stores that

dominate the malls.

So here's a thread that's dedicated to this dying breed ...
