rich_taylor____mequon__wi
When I set my S3 on RAW capture, it indicates a capacity of 38 images with a 512MB CARD. When I set my D70 for NEF images, it improves to about 47 images (again, a 512MB card). Assuming about double that amount with my 1G cards, I'd need a lot of memory to shoot an entire event in RAW. I've got (3) 1G cards and (2) 512MB cards. That would offer me a maximum of less than 400 total images. My friend's D2h (which is a 4 meg camera), allows for more than twice those numbers in NEF mode. What acccounts for the difference? Is the D2h more "efficient" in some way. If so, how would it be explained? Any ideas?
zacker
Hmmmm, Whats the difference in megapixels? or, is there a file size difference? The only thing I dont like about RAW is: The work and time involved in "fixing" and touching up the files before printing.. I just did around 180 files from a wedding.. man, it takes forever.. esp. when you have a full time job at 10 hrs. per day. If I had 10 Hrs to do the files it would be different! -zacker-
clarke_ross
I believe that on the D70, the latest firmware upgrade increases the amount of NEF images on a 512MB card to over 80.
bobatkins
The only thing I dont like about RAW is: The work and time involved in "fixing" and touching up the files before printing
So if you shot JPEG you wouldn't need to "fix and touch up" the images? marbing
First remember that RAW is just a marketing term used to catch the unwary. The files that people call RAW are NOT really the raw, unprocessed data stream from your sensor but have gone through a certain amount of proprietary, in-camera processing to get them into a readable file format. Header information has to be written for the RAW reader software to draw upon, etc. Part of that processing can include lossless compression in order to increase the number of files that can be saved...of course that adds to the write-times. terry_rory
The lastest firmware upgrade on the D70 has NOT increased the number of RAW images you can get on any given card. It has merely improved the accuracy of the predicted number of images that are left. In reality you will still get exactly the same number of RAW shots (assuming the same type of pics) on a 512kb CF card on the D70 with or without the latest firmware upgrade. It is just the number of shots remaining is more accurately predicted with firmare upgrade 2.0.
gregg_johnson
The D2h is 4mp whereas the D70 is 6mp, and the Fuji S3 is either 8mp or 12mp. The larger the mp the more space it's going to take up on the CF
joseph_wisniewski
Wow, photo.net gets Meryl posts, too "Part of that processing can include lossless compression in order to increase the number of files that can be saved...of course that adds to the write-times" Of course, that's totally untrue. Every current camera that supports raw compression has greatly decreased write times when you turn it on.
