More pleasurable readings ... search for Gandy (Stephen Gandy is the sole distributor of Cosina products) when you click on that link below.

It's interesting to note that there are ONLY 2 lens makers in the world that has the ability to produce their own glass: Cosina and Nikon! That was one of the reasons why Zeiss chose Cosina as a partner for the ZM and ZF lenses.

That only Nikon and Cosina make their own glass is not all that surprising in an era of OEMs and outsourcing. It may make a lot more sense for someone else to make the glass. I am a little curious what sorts of autofocus and automated bodies (or just parts) Cosina makes, since the manual camera and manual lens market seems to be drying up.

Arthur, The info is rather depressing. Cosina justifies making their own glass by coming up with innovative, new, prime lenses. :-)

Canon did develop their own fluorite glass. The company that makes it for them is spun off in to another. So, the statement that only two companies make their own glass is not exactly correct.

Why should an optical design company make their own glass? It is so much more sensible to have an existing glass maker make a special order glass for them if there is such a need. All major glassmakers make custom glasses.

Oh, and Zeiss is special case in "doesn't make its own glass" because Zeiss and Schott are owned and controlled by the same entity - Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung. It would be totaly ridiculous if Zeiss started making their own glass.

>All major glassmakers make custom glasses.

That's not quite true. It has to be in their catalog or else it is truly custom and pricing/availability of raw materials have to negotiated. If the formula is overly exotic (like the one used in the Leica Noctilux f1.2 version 1), it will be turned down and that was why Leica made it their own in their lab at that time. Leica no longer has a glass research lab.
