john_bacon_shone
We finally have a release date for this lens (at least for Canon mount) The link below (after google translation) yields a price of 55,000 yen and a release date of June 25th. http://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/news/30_14_dg_n.htm http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sigma-photo.co.jp%2Fnews%2F30_14_dg_n.htm&langpair=ja%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools
jojo_ma
Sounds right. I spoke with Sigma USA recently and they told me end of this month. It'll be a high-demand lens.
dogbert
This and the 18-50 f2.8 EX DC are the kind of EF-S lenses Canon should be producing. I guess they have the 24mm and 35 mm 1.4 Ls, but for most digital shooters they are overkill.
upe_vantonni1
that comes out to roughly 500$. where are all these cheap light fast deigital lenses we heard so much about, since the chips don't need as much glass as film.... sure, its much less expensive than the canon 35 L, but i still think the price point is high. 300-400$, and i'd have an order in already. lousy dollar. even the olympus 4-3 lenses are terribly expensive. dogbert
It is listed at Adorama for $449, though not yet available.
looscanon
Amazon.com has a price of $389.94 plus free shipping if you so choose. It is not yet in stock but the price seems reasonable to me if the lens has outstanding performance. Of course it may turn out to be a dud so I guess it's best to wait for reviews. steve_dunn2
<p>You can't tell everything about a lens from its MTF data, but at this point, that's all we have, and <a href="http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00CGaO">this lens' MTF graph is not bad but certainly not up to the level of the Canon 50/1.4.</a></p> <p>We won't see a Canon EF-S 30 (or thereabouts) f/1.4. There's already the 28/1.8 for those who want a fast prime at around this focal length; while Canon has both f/1.8 and f/1.4 50mm lenses, in that case the 1.8 is a bargain-priced lens, and since the 28/1.8 is the premium 28mm lens, there's no room for an f/1.4 lens at this focal length. Also, given the L status (and corresponding price) of the 24/1.4 and 35/1.4, an affordable f/1.4 lens between them is quite unlikely, and if it appears, it will be an L, not an EF-S, with a corresponding price.</p> <p>So if you want an f/1.4 50mm-equivalent for a 1.6-crop digital body, the Sigma is the only game at this point, and if anyone else competes, it will be another third-party, not Canon.</p>
dogbert
Steve I agree that we are unlikely to see a simmilar lens from Canon, but probably not because of the sound logic of your arguments. Afterall logic would not suggest introducing a 60 EF-S macro?
steve_dunn2
<p>I was surprised by the 60 macro, as I didn't expect anything but wide (or wide-ish) EF-S zooms to appear, but I think it fits, logically. There have been a number of folks posting that the 100 macro is too long for their tastes on a 1.6-crop body. The 50 macro doesn't cut it if you want 1:1 (although if you add the life-size converter it would be reasonable). So a 60 macro, dedicated to the 1.6-crop bodies where it works very much like a 100 macro would on a full-frame body, seems logical to me.</p>
dogbert
Not sure if this is old news, but I noticed Adorama is also taking orders for the Sigma 10-22 EX DC HSM. It is $469 which seems good value, assuming the performance is ok. Now the question, should I get rid of my 12-24 EX?
carnagex_carnagex
---Now the question, should I get rid of my 12-24 EX?--- Not if you plan on moving to a 1.3x or full frame sensor in the future. (DC is for APS-C sized sensors only)
yakim_peled1
<p> Until I see some reviews which prove I am totally wrong, <a href="http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00CGaO">I think it is way too expensive</a>. I'd rather have a Sigma or Canon 28/1.8 as they are cheaper, apparently optically as good and offer full frame coverage, if I ever buy a 1.3X/1.0X DSLR.</p> <p>Happy shooting, <br> Yakim.</p>
ryanjoseph
These reduced frame lenses have ended up being a joke. They just cost more than full frame ones and are not as versatile or future proof.
bruce johnson
I'd like a fast prime in this range so I'm awaiting the comparison of this lens to the EF 28/1.8. Canon's lens is smaller, lighter, cheaper, full-frame, wider and has closer -focusing than the Sigma. The Sigma is faster and if it has noticeably better wide-open sharpness than the 28, I'll likely get it, else I'll spring for the 28. Despite some comments (I have no experience with the FF 28/1.8) on the 28/1.8's performance, I'm thinking that a 1.6x crop on a full-frame lens might actually be better than a reduced-frame lens. We'll see soon enough I suppose.
