richard_brown1
Hi folks, I understand that Dan closed this doors for business but does anyone know if he is doing any work on the side? I have a pair of extension tubes that need adjusting - a real small job. Any one know his number? Thank you so muchRichard
al_kaplan1
I ran into a Hasselblad toting photographer a few times recently at the Lunastar Cafe across from city hall on N.E. 125th St. who told me that Manfred (that was "Dan's" real name. I guess he'd bought the place from "Dan") was working out of his house and using another photographer's studio as a pick up/drop off place. I did write down the info but the problem is where the note is...LOL
harvey_trautenberg1
Al Kaplan poted about Gunter doing work from home a while back. Try a search or wait for Al to advise us. Dan's has been around my whole life it seems. They will be missed. He was an old time voigtlander trained camera guy. I got screwed there a lot (everytime I was missing one he would have the replacement).
al_kaplan1
I can't find the scrap of paper with that info I'd written down. I'll stop by the Lunastar Cafe and try to get the Hasselblad guy's name/phone number from Alexis, and then proceed from there.
james mitchell dc
Al, is that "Hasselblad guy" the guy we ran into there the last time I was down your way? During the open mic night.
al_kaplan1
James, it must be him. I'll head over there later today and try to track him down.
al_kaplan1
The "Hassleblad guy" is named Mike. Alexis looked for his number and couldn't find it, called her significant other Keith who's a friend of Mike's, but he's working on the set of a TV production and will call her back later. Anyway, at some point I should get the information. Hang in there!
richard_brown1
Thanks Al for your efforts but, I have found out that Manfred is still working on cameras. A few years ago I was at Aperture which is a rental studio in Miami Beach. On the counter were some Mamiya RZs which were on there way to Dans (Manfred) so, I thought I would give Aerture a call to see if they new where he was. We went through the story of the shop had to close due to rent increases.....anyway, the story is that he goes each Wednesday round about noon to pick up equipment for repair at another rental studio called One Source Studios which is located at 6440 4th Ct. Miami 305.751.2556. (President/Owner is Andrew Dillon) So, I will be dropping my extension tubes off at One Source for Manfred to fix. I only have good things to say about him - he is honest and does great work at a resonable price. He adjusted my range finder in my Leica M4 3 or 4 years ago and I have never had a problem since. Thanks again Al Richard..
al_kaplan1
Great Richard! Thanks! This time I'm going to put that on a card in my card file, not a scrap of paper in my wallet or wherever. He really is a great repairman.
al_kaplan1
These were shot in October 2005 a couple of months before the shop closed down. http://www.photo.net/photo/3615333 http://www.photo.net/photo/3615367
karl_georg_wolf
Again wonderful shots, AL ! How does it feel to be right in the middle of history ? What a shame all these establishments have to vanish ... Best regards
al_kaplan1
Karl, property values and rents here have gone through the roof over the last 5 years or so. Residential rents are putting the squeeze on a lot of working people also. As long as those of us still using film cameras can locate Manfred we'll be happy. He didn't really advertize, and his shop was set back from the road so you really had to look for it anyway. His business was always by word of mouth and referrals. Probably next week I'll post a couple of your shots on my blog that you sent, the ones you shot in Miami a few weeks ago. I'll also post some I shot and mail some prints to you. karl_georg_wolf
Hello AL, thats good news ! Iam looking forward to this event !! These days its hotter here in GERMANY than it ever was in FLORIDA, by the way. Things are upside down, not only in our photoworld, the Lebanon (ect.) but also meteorologically ... john_graham3
"Again wonderful shots, AL !" I'm speechless. What specifically about those fuzzy, blown-out, cellphone-quality snapshots do you count as "wonderful"? There are many people on this forum whose photos truly are awesome. Those are, excuse me, just awful.
Brad_
John, you've just wandered into a reality distortion field. Slowly back away from your display to a distance of 50 feet and everything will be OK. www.citysnaps.net
al_kaplan1
Thanks, Brad and John. I know that I can always count on you guys to get other folks to click on my links. Snide comments like those make people curious.

barefoot
John's assesment was accurate.
Which one was that Brad - Al's photos being awful or the existence of awsome photos on this forum. From what I can tell the photos aren't wonderful due to bokeh, or lines per mm, or gradation. Looks like content is what's most important.

How about Stuart Richardson's shots from Iceland? There are many others, though I can't be certain all of them are still active on the Leica forum. Not that anyone could blame them.
