Anonymous 3/3 rater on the rampage

Seems like there is some ratings abuse currently going on right now.

I was viewing some photos in the critique forum just a few minutes

ago and happened to click on one of Tim Holte's photos to view it. I

happened to notice that some one rated it a 3/3 anonymously. I didn't

think it was POW material but didn't think it was a 3/3 either. So, I

chalked it up to the fact that everyone is entitled to their own

opinion. I then viewed all 16 of the photos on the front page of the

critique forum and all but the first 2 had an anonymous 3/3 rates on

them. I will note that I did not have a photo in the queue to be

rated so I mention this not out of selfish frustration. Just an

observation.

This thread will get the usual responders noting we shouldn't be so sensitive about anonymous low ratings. Sensitivity isn't the issue; the issue is a photo's visibility. The anonymous low ratings condemn an image to limited views, and that's the low-raters' game plan. The moderators know this as well.

yes i have 3/3 almost on every photo but<br>

1. anybody could really believe they are bellow average<br>

2. if someone is doing that on purpose then it is just funny that a person can be so obsessed with 'hate'<br><br>

just imagine that you are having an exhibition and suddenly hear that one visitor says 'crap' looking at your photographs<br>

should you call a guard to kick him out of the gallery?

Will, I too have noticed the increased rating of 3/3.

Also I find that you'll tend to get 3/3 rated twice within what appears to be the same time frame. Very irritating to say the least.

This is definitely something automated. I don't mind someone giving me a 3/3 as such, but when its automated it really bugs me.

Pity the ratings are anonymous, but thats a different conversation which I'm not gonna get into :)

I may take a long page to display and for that I am really sorry. But just think about the list below. All the postings for the last one hour or so has been rated 3/3 in very first minute of postings. What is going on !<BR><BR>

The moderators will delete pattern rating and any abusive ratings when brought to there attention. The Internet is fl of people that you wouldn't let in your house and they feel empowered to be childish and vindictive when they can due so incognito.

I sympathize but for your own health just develop the don't care mentality the overall problem either can't be fixed or would be to much work for the tiny staff Pnet has to police such actions. I fully agree with others it is most likely someone either angry or trying to boost there own visibility that are dropping the 3's.

Reporting to this issue to abuseATphotoDOTnet only puts out this fire. There will be another fire and another fire and another fire. I wanted to bring awareness to this issue so we can solve the issue and not just put out fires.

Why not do something bold like display the name next to all the 3/3 rates the person left today. Again, it's quite obvious this person is not rating on conent, but rather making a disgusting statement. Allow this person to be heard and seen.

if this 3/3 person would like to make some statement then he/she won't rate anonymously<br>

and pinpointing this one person because of such low rating could soon lead to every rating below '5' to be 'illegal'<br>

<i>i do not hesitate sometimes to rate '2' some selected photographs</i>

I fully support ANY 1-7 rating a person wants to leave on a photo, and I even support being able to do this anonymously, only if they are basing their ratings on the photograph's content. Again, what happended today was obviosuly malicious and blatant. That's what I and many other people have a problem with.

If you made everyone put there name on every rating it would end up like *bay retaliatory feedback. Someone leaves a truly deserving three and then that persons feelings get hurt and send a one back. There is no easy solution to this problem because as humans we are emotional not rational no matter how much we try to convince ourselves otherwise.

I hate these 3/3 along as much as any photographer who feels his work has any merit, but my theory has always been the 3/3 folks are the same as the old 7/7 gang who feel if they can't inflate there own pathetic ratings they will deflate any photo they feel that may be a threat to theres. Pretty sorry situation. Pops

Donald, I totally agree with you and I'm not saying that we should display names of every 3/3 rate. The world of photography has many different views, tastes, and ideas so naturally one person who thinks a photo is a 7/7 can mean a 3/3 to the next person. Again, I am not supporting the idea of exposing <b> every </b> 3/3 rate. I this particular instance, it was not a person rating images based on opinon. It was malicious and blatant. No, I'm not 100% positive, but if it smells like a duck, looks like a duck, than......All I am saying is that a quick investigation can determine weather or not ONE account rated 50 photos consecutively 3/3.

quite frankly, I don't like anonymous ratings but if we are to have them, anonymous 3/3 ratings should not be allowed. There is no question about the fact there are folks out there giving everything in sight an anonymous 3/3 ( I call them A33's ). I don't know if they are just doing it for the fun of it or to boost their own and/or friends ratings. The way to end this is to simply disallow anonymous 3/3's.

And yes, I am unhappy about the anonymous 3/3's I have received but I am equally unhappy about other peoples photographs that did not deserve them either.

I am here to share my pictures and enjoy/learn from others; anonymous 3/3's are out of line and out of place.

Thus endeth the sermon. cb

CB, I disagree. As much as I HATE the anonymous 3/3 rate on my photos, I think people should have that right. Personally I no longer rate anything below what I think is a 5/5. I will however leave comments and feedback. But I don't expect other people to follow my own policy. Not every photo is a good photo. Some photos really do deserve a 3/3 rating, some even deserve a 1/1. So people should be allowed to rate accordingly. They should be allowed to rate low without fear of retaliation. Again, it's all about intent and motivation. It's just a shame that people can't observe the honor system.
