35mmdelux
Here is the scenario: 35mm cron (1971 model) is my primary lens of use. I was interested in a Lux model as I settle in with the focal length. Your model recommendation would be appreciated. Thank you. Paul
douglas k.
For $1350 you should be able to buy the asph version, which is (according to everything I have read here) much better.

douglas k.
I'm not gonna do the shopping for him, Eliot. But if you want a non-asph, try this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3341&item=7515320588&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
eliot_rosen1
Douglas, I don't get it, that auction is for a pre-asph lens, I was asking where you get the ASPH 35/1.4 for that amount. Be that as it may, the auction still has two days to go anyone. No, thank goodness you aren't dooing my shopping. :-)
35mmdelux
There was a copy for that amount last week on KEH. So they are avilable at that price range.....
douglas k.
There you go, Eliot...It's simply a matter of shopping around a bit and perhaps waiting a little while.
feli
Rich over at www.photovillage.com had a used Lux ASPH listed for sale, at a very good price. feli
35mmdelux
the problem with the asph is that they are really big lenses and defeats my stealth purpose. I don't see myself (yet)hanging with the Hells Angels screaming I'm a photog, even if the asph is better. That was in the old days. I'm married now though and the most danger I see now is the checkout guy at the local supermarket.
eliot_rosen1
Paul/Douglas. That $ 1350 is a lowball price. I couldn't find any 35/1.4 ASPH on sale at KEH now, so I can't comment on the one they had for sale. Except to say that they have a category called "BGN" (bargain) which includes products that are seriously cospmetically and optically challenged, and this may have been one of them. The lens listed by photovillage is $ 1500 and is described as having good glass but "bargain price" with barrel wear. No condition stated, but my guess is that it is not pretty, to say the least. I have searched a bunch of websites for prices of 35/1.4 ASPH used, and for decent but not mint mint condition (E+ or better), you are looking at $ 1800 or more. I couldn't find anything in the range of $ 1350. But if I did see one, I would be concerned about the reason for the low price, because there WILL be a reason. stephen_w.
Eliot, I recently sold an ASPH/1.4 for $1300 because I won't profit from this forum. I traded with a local chap for a 75/1.4, which I bought here for $1250. I added the cost of three B+W MRC filters from Patrick, DC for $50. Vic had sent me a check for the kit, but changed his mind after my "Upgrading" post. He mentioned I should seek $1600+ for it.

j._mose
Paul...are you after that special look (or glow) that the pre ASPH lux yields? I have often read that 35 lux, 50 noc and 75 lux all have this characteristic, with many a follower.
al_kaplan1
Here's a shot I made back in 1972 with a 35/1.4 Summilux with the eyes for an M3, on an M3. http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=0098au The guy, Nathan Benn, just retired as director of the international picture agency ASMP after graduating from the U of Miami and spending 20 years working as a photographer for the National Geographic book division. The little girl, Elena Kaplan, is a tax attorney with a large firm in Atlanta. Her mom in the background is now Dr. Stephanie Brundage, M.D. and heads up a multi-county hospital district in Western South Carolina.
al_kaplan1
I shoulda said it's the third picture down, and I suppose claimed the baby as mine, the woman as my wife back then, and Nathan was the local kid who used my darkroom. Yes, he too had a Leica M2 back then along with his Nikon F.
35mmdelux
Thanks for sharing those family pics. Reminds me of where I am now - except for the Beatle haircut and the van - although I'm a hell of alot older than you were then. Yep, got me a 1-1/2 year old son.<div></div>
al_kaplan1
Cute son, Paul! I've often wished that I'd kept that 'lux although the 'cron that replaced it flared less and was sharper. But then I wish I'd kept the 'cron longer too. It was a black paint Wetzlar version one ;-( Live and learn...
arca-swiss man
Can one of the Leica exports from this group please advise me on the purchase of a 35mm lens for my "new" Leica M4? Should I go with the Summicron ASPH, Summilux ASPH or the non-Aspheric versions? What is the difference in actual "look"? Are the ASPH too analytical? I am an old "Large Format" guy and I value your opinions. Many thanks, Mike creativevisions@verizon.net
35mmdelux
As far as I can determine, the experts still go with the summicron - the later the version, the better. The jury is somewhat still out on the newer asph version because of flare issues - many devotees argue that the asph is best used wide open. <You can pick up a minty asph cron for $1500 (most everywhere) and the pre-asph for half that much.> You decide. No one is touting the virtues of the summilux - neither the pre-asph not the asph versions. But if you need the extra speed.....
35mmdelux
I need to stop acting like a gentleman collector and use the equip more, much more. There was a 20-year time span where I only had 1 camera 1 lens. I paid much more attention to my subject in those days. I need to return to the days when I had conviction.
