How would one know if their picture getting published isn't a scam?

Recommended Posts

'Vanity publishing' has been going for a long time and is basically an arrangement where a publisher agrees to publish your work if you pay the costs. The 'vanity' label comes from the tendency of no-talent people to go to these places to get their work published because they think it's good (but it's not). Not that I'm putting you in that category, but these people you're dealing with sound like the type.

OK, look: There are well established scam artists out there who cater to peoples vanity in order to separated them from their money. The two that have been around the longest (that I know of) are the so-called International Library of Poetry and International Library of Photography. They run "contests". You submit any poem or any image, any quality, and you're a "winner". All you have to do to get your work published is pay them $XXX for the publication. Neat, huh? There's a similar scam running now for those looking for a boost in self esteem, called the Cambridge Who's Who, who have nominated YOU to be among the elite corps of professionals to be listed in their directory. Doesn't cost anything to be listed, but it will cost you $XXX to see the book. Getting the picture?

Now, I won't ask how old you are. But can you tell us whether any of this sounds like your situation?

Well, it does sound a lot similar to my situation. I'm not younge, maybe a little nieve, but it didn't hit me until a second website said the same thing as the first. It seemed to good to be true. They had me going because I saw I wasn't the only one, being they had a ton of other people's pictures that they were publishing. Can you blame me?

The bottom line is that you asked someone for advice before making a commitment, so in my opinion, you didn't do anything wrong. Some people get a bit irate when people ask questions that they feel should be obvious, others get tired of hearing similar questions asked over and over, and some just like to sound like they know everything - and sometimes impersonal forms of communication, like Internet forums, make it easy to read in something were nothing exists, or to miss something that was meant to be there. Don't take it personally.

If you received a letter containing 10 names, and were instructed to mail $100.00 to the last name on the list, place your name at the top of the list, then mail 10 copies of the letter to 10 additional people, then told that in a few days, you'd receive 100s of 100 dollar bills in the mail, would you do it? If so, or if not, WHY?

The newest one going is a conference scam. They say they want to honor you, give you an award at a ceremony that is being held at their next big conference in Las Vegas. Oh by the way it cost over $300 to register and doesn't include airfare, hotel, food etc. They even have a picture of the band that is going to perform and a lovely shot of the crystal sculpture award, engraved with your name (a $170.00 value!) in the pamphlet as well.

<em>"... If you see the Globe Icon next to the name, my advice is, pay no

attention..."</em></p>

<p>Sounds like you're painting with too broad a brush. Both Bob Atkins and Todd Peach have

the Globe icon and I've never know <em>either</em> to be obnoxiousthey've always

been patient and helpful. While there may be a handful mean-spirited "heros," I

don't think it's fair or accurate to characterize <em>all</em> of them that way.

Next to a poster's name, there may be one or more colored icons. This one (<img

src="/member-status-icons/patron-small.gif" width="15" height="14" align="middle">) is for "patrons"AKA, subscribers. The Globe (<img

src="/member-status-icons/hero-small.gif" width="13"

height="22"align="middle">) is for "P.net Heros." If

you click on the icon next to a name, you'll get an explanation of that icon.
