robertin_m
Are these types of lenses the same, meaning will an AF-D flash unit work with a"G" lens?
ShunCheung
No, G means no aperture ring. All G lenses are also AF-D though, and AF-S a one particular type of AF-D.

NetR
I'm not sure that Shun's answer, although correct, was as clear as it could have been. Yes, a "G" lens will function properly with an AF-D flash, as all "G" lenses have the "D" technology (D is for distance). But no, they are not the same for the reason shown above - no aperture ring. mawz
G lenses are not necessarily AF-S, and AF-S isn't necessarily G. AF-S is purely the AF drive type, although all AF-S lenses are AF-D or G lenses. However all G lenses are AF-D for purposes of lens/body communication(And thus communicate distance information to compatible bodies for flash exposure). What G lenses are not is AI or AI-S as they lack the aperture ring and mechanical aperture communication post.
