Janis,

Welcome to the forum first off. Secondly, it depends on what you plan on shooting. Thirdly, it depends on how much you are willing to spend. You may also want to do some searches on this topic because it has been asked a few times in the forum.

My recommendation:

1. Canon 28-135 IS USM 3.5 - 4.5 (This is a nice consumer lens. Worth every penny. IS is a little loud. The apetures are a little slow.) The images on this page were taken with this lens:

2. Canon 70-200 IS USM 2.8 (Expensive but worth it if you need IS.)

3. Sigma 70-200 EX HSM 2.8 (About $800.00 and sharp as Canon version, but no IS. I do not need IS with fast glass.) Most of these images were shot with this lens:

4. Canon 24-70 USM 2.8 (No IS, but an AWESOME lens. It is also EXPENSIVE. This is my next purchase.)

Happy Shooting!

Since you are new to the forum, here's a few tips. First of all, if you're asking about lenses, you need to specify what you shoot most of the time. If it's rhinos in a zoo, you will probably want something like a 70-200 IS. If it's birds, you will be looking at a 500mm or 600mm IS lens. Second, what is your budget? There are telephotos for around $600 (70-200 f/4) or you can spend over $6,000 (400 f/2.8, 500 + 600 f/4). Third, are you looking for the best image quality (primes), the most flexibility (28-300 L, 100-400 L), or the best value (70-200 L or Sigma 70-200)? Be as specific as possible so that we can help answer your questions. Good luck.
