MF with D200: your lens recommendations

As I wrote in the other thread I just got a 55/2.8 Micro-Nikkor that I really

like. I'm also thinking about getting one of the 50ish 1.2 lenses for their

unique imaging characteristics with open aperture. What other MF lenses would

you recommend for use on a D200 based on their unique signature compared to an

equivalent AF lens or because there is no AF equivalent or just because they're

cheap right now? I read about the 35/1.4 and the 105/2.5 but I already have the

Sigma 30/1.4 and the Nikon 85/1.8 so I guess there's no point in getting the MF

lenses, is there?

Thanks Leon. Yeah, of course it depends on the application. My question was aimed at getting a broad overview of what's there in the MF field since I haven't looked into that so far at all. The D200 is my first Nikon that can actually meter with MF lenses.

180 F/2.8 AIS either ED or not - great lens

Or ... 28 f/2.0 AIS

300 f/2.8 AIS MF ED - about 1/4 the cost of AF & a great lens even wide open

400 f/2.8 AIS - ditto above

I either own or have owned them all & also have a D200 now & tend to MF anyhow depending on subject matter even with AF lenses.

The 15/3.5 would be nice, but I am not sure an EX rating at $800US, that this lens would be

any better than dealing with AF with the likes of the Nikkor 12-24 or the Tokina 12-24. My

shop has a Nikkor 12-24 for just $600US used.It seems pretty clean from what I remember.

Kind of surprised that you left out the 85/2.0 and the 135/2.0......

So far I'm happy with my 17mm Tokina SL, 55mm F3.5 macro Nikkor AI (unbelievably sharp on this camera), 105mm F2.8 macro Nikkor AIS, 180mm ED AIS, 300mm F4.5 AIS (nice and sharp), 400mm F3.5 AIS on the D200. I have not tried my 24mm or 28mm AIS lenses as the 20mm AFD is so terrific...I am going to sell them. I have not tried any of my 50's as now they become 75mm and I just don't shoot that focal length. I will have to test the 35mm F1.4 against my 35mm AFD to see which gives the better results with the D200.

All of the manual focus lenses, when entered into the cameras system before use (non CPU lens setting) yield very nice color and the D200 meters them perfectly.

D200 = a terrific camera.
