Almost Daily Squares by Rick Stolk

"...On the other hand, the choice of subject is much more difficult

than that...Well, not really difficult but subtle and precarious.

On first sight, the scenes look plain and dull (and at 2nd, 3rd and

4th sight still do, for most people: I get about the lowest ratings

here)

But I always feel (there's that word again) in the scenes and places

I photograph that 'something has happened there', something eerie,

something unpleasant, something illegal. There are no people. Have

they just left? Are they hiding? Are they coming?

I try to capture that feeling, emphasise it with (lack of) colors,

lack of 'photoshop tricks', lack of drama, large depth of field and

so on.

Just in order to create a sense of 'hyperrealism' (a skill I haven't

mastered just yet), to give the viewer the same uneasy feeling about

a place without throwing something in their face. That's what I'm

trying to accomplish and I must say: I do succeed, once in a while..."

The squares are a project (also found on my site) where I shoot and

publish a storytelling square almost daily. For the interested: if

you want to keep track of this continuous story without looking here

every day, get on my mailinglist via my site (or mail to

almostdailysquare@rickstolk.com ) and you'll receive the square

almost daily in your mailbox (app. 150-200 Kb). No strings attached,

just to reach a larger audience.

With regards,
