If you are going to be close, the camera noise may be too much, but the VR 80-400mm lens will work very well. Will it be sunny? If not, a 300mm f2.8 or a 300mm f4 lens might be better on a monopod. (The VR feature keeps the lens movement at a minimum, but it does not stop the action in low-light situations. Plus be sure to take extra, fresh batteries -- your camera body has to 'juice' the VR lens.)

300-400mm is fine. I just got back from Augusta last week. My advice is do a lot of research on the course layout and the barrier set up. Find out where the best angles are, get in position early, and let the golfers come to you. If you know you want Tiger on the 18th tee, go there when he is on 14 or 15 and wait.
