streetlevel
looks to me like he just used the gaussian grain filter in PS (monochromatic)...doesn't need much...
akcelik
Does that filter come with Photoshop CS? Cant seem to find, so many options...
streetlevel
sorry - filter/noise/add noise > gaussian, monochromatic, play with the percentage... I'd start at no more than 7% and see what that gets you.
streetlevel
you can also play with filter/texture/grain - and see what that does for you, but I have better luck with the add noise option...
akcelik
Got it.. Thanks Will. :) I dont suppose its possible to add those little dusty burned out anomalies with PS?
streetlevel
no prob - and yes it is...it just takes some time and experimentation. I'd create a custom shaped brush and play with that route...mix in a little gaussian blur, some opacity settings and voila... play a bit.
sean de merchant httpw
The best technique for adding noise to an image I have seen in PS is the following.
1) Create a curves adjustment layer. Have it slightly darken the 3/4 tone and significantly darken the 1/4 tone. (see diagram)
2) Then invert the layer mask and add noise (filter->noise->add noise) to the layer mask (this is selected by clicking the area to the right of the green circle in the diagram).
3) If you double click where the green circle is, then you can go in and adjust the tonal response of the curves layer mask once the noise is added so that you can adjust the character of the noise you added.
4) If it is desired, then you can add an additional curves layer mask to add noise which lightens the image using this same technique.
