Who keeps a camera with them at all times?

Recommended Posts

I went to a friend's place last night to watch vids. I haven't taken

photos for quite a while and didn't really think to take a camera with

me, even if just for the principle of being ready to take a pic if I

saw one. I wish I did now as I would have had a nice portrait of her

and also a few snaps of her adorable cat.

And I thought of something Peter A said not too long ago, that he

takes a camera with him wherever he goes. I'm thinking maybe it's a

good idea, even if you're only making a social call, or whatever.

So who among us keeps a camera with them at all (or most) times? If

so, what kind? Anyone here lug around DSLRs? Or are you happy with an

M/S Leica with one or two lenses?

I carried an Olympus XA for a very short while. But the lens was one

stop too slow and I had no option to go to 50mm or even 75mm. Great,

quiet shutter, though. I can see the convenience of a compact digital

but the extra bulk of an M, Screw body or RD-1 would be worth the

effort, I'd say.

I think I'll dig out my F3 and choose between that and my IIIa +

Summar. Raid's 50mm f/1.2 is mighty tempting but I haven't the cash

ATM. OTOH a Nikkor f/1.4 or even a CV lens would be more compact.

Film? Probably XP2 or some colour neg ISO400/800 Fuji or Kodak emulsion.

I do. This is one of the advantage of the leica. It's small and it's rugged. I can just throw it

in my backpack and bring it anywhere I go.

I usually bring M6 with a 50 lux so that I'm ready to take pictures in any light condition. I

just bought a 35mm cron pre-asph for its compactness so I'll see if my "everyday" gear

will change or not. But don't get me wrong, the lux is actually not that big (not much

bigger than the penultimate 50mm cron) and the 50mm focal length is pretty versatile.

Actually Donald, the camera police do care. AND they have photographic documentation to that effect (regarding your carrying of a camera). They ALWAYS carry a camera. Whether they use it is up to their discretion. Big brother is watching (and photographing). ;->

I used to carry my M6ttl around with me everywhere, until one day when I left it in the Cheesecake Factory. Thank God someone turned it in to security and I got my camera and all my lenses back :)

But I've since learnt my lesson, and so I carry with me all the time is the Panasonic FX7 digicam.

Donald -- I don't think he asked you personally...the idea of this sort of question is for

people who WANT to answer to engage in a discussion. If you don't want to participate,

why even bother? Why not go take some pictures or torture small animals or just do

whatever it is you do when you are not writing surly responses on an internet forum.

<P>In answering the question, I try to bring a camera with me to most places. Even if I

don't plan on using it, I find it gets me to think photographically -- about composition,

exposure, lens and film choice etc. I usually just bring a domke 803 with an m3 and

summicron collapsible, but for me it is more about the state of mind.

I always have a Panasonic FX7 in my pocket for snaps (think of it as a portable photocopier, not a camera). I used to carry a Contax T3 in my vest pocket all the time, but nowadays I am usually carrying a messenger bag with a Leica MP, a 50mm Summicron and a few rolls of film, so the T3 was redundant.

I try to, but my employer makes it difficult. Bringing a camera to the office is instant termination, even keeping one in one's own car is fraught with problems, varying from employer disapproval to summertime meltdown. In the summer, I keep the camera in a lunch pack with coolant of some sort. Since size is an issue for discretionary photography, I most often carry a Canon A95 in a vest pocket. It is the most compact camera I own, followed by Retina IIa, and Leica screwmount.
