a.brunner
I need a fairly accurate idea of the front to back dimension of the removable base plate of the new M8. I know it is more than the M7, which is very close to 32mm from front to back. Could any of you have any way to find out what the M8 is? I have no idea who has access to one so they could measure it, but I imagine one of you does. Thanks!
peter_evans4
Sorry, I don't know. I've never touched one (or an M7 either, as far as I can remember.) This is an interesting question, though. Are you designing a slip-proof marble plinth for it, perhaps?
ken_ford1
... or a Leicavit-sized auxiliary battery pack?
michael_b._elmer
Why don't you ask Leica? The comments you get may seem stupid, but perhaps they demonstrate that it might be desirable with more explanation on the background for your need. karl_georg_wolf
Have a chance to handle the camera tomorrow afternoon (GMT that is) and try to measure it for you. But I do not have a micrometer, I will use a ruler, hope that is close enough. The camera is a bit wider than the baseplate, because of the dial, the display and the bajonett(?sp)flange pointing out. Just for curiosity: the width of my M4-P- baseplate ist just under 32 mm (31.8 as a guess). Best
leon chang
I held one at the Photokina 2 wks ago. If I recall correctly the baseplate seemed almost 0.6 tot 0.9 mm wider than the regular baseplate of my MP. You don't notice it untill you hold one in your hands. To me it just didn't feel right.......hard to explain. The MP has a more solid/ rugged feel to it even if the M8 felt like a real Leica M. Maybe the MP continues to be the best Leica ever built? paul hart
The pdf document on product information for the M8 on Leica's own website says: Dimensions (W x H x D) approx 139 x 80 x 37 mm. That's a whole 5mm deeper than the MP before excessive fondling causes the metal to expand.
james_elwing
LFI 7/06 says 36.9mm, but that would include the extra thickness from the sensor which bulges out the back. The top plate and base plate eppear to have the same dimensions, so I would think the thickness would be less than 35. There are a few images around (Leica?) which show the M7 & M8 same size, so I would think you could work it out from there. It would be interesting to know if Focoslide type equipment, where camera thickness may be an issue, could be modified to fit M8.
piotr_panne
Proportioned to fit attractively on a stack of 8.5 by 11.
eric_paulsen
As noted by several responses the published data seems to be an overall camera dimension, not just the removable base plate dimension. Your eye agrees with mine Mr. Wolf at 32mm for the old M-Series. I very much look forward to your observation of the M8 today! BRGDS all! eric_paulsen
As previously noted I also am curious as to the actual M8 removable base dimension. Did you have any luck Mr. Wolf? BRGRDS all & Brunner.
roland_schmid
"Maybe the MP continues to be the best Leica ever built?" Well I don't know. My MP`s viewfinder is sucking dust all the time. And it is already cleant by Leica technicans twice.
karl_georg_wolf
>> A. Brunner >> Eric Paulsen sorry for being late, but somehow I had forgotten to come back here with these dimensions: the width of the bottomplate turned out to be 35 mm, the length 148 mm. Tripodthread is (almost) in the center of the thing, perhaps 10 mm out. The incredible thing at the LEICA-demo was the new rf-coupled Tri-Elmar lens 16/ 18/ 21 mm. I took a few sample shots with my M6 and as a keen 15 mm-VC-lens-user I must say the performance was WONDERFUL. No blurred edges, sharp cornerdefinition even at f4. Before I jump at the M8 I think Santa Claus is due to deliver this one (EUR 3.100 in our areas here). The vf to go with it (on a normal LEICA M and the M8) is also a hit. Gives all the frames for this lens from 16 to 28 mm as well as parallaxcorrection AND a bubble at the bottom for levelling. Best
