light meters...

For what purpose will you use the meter? Is there something that your camera's meter isn't doing that requires an external meter?

If you check the tutorials and archives here , there are pages of 411 about meters.

Light meters work rather simply. A light sensitive cell of some type, converts photons (light energy) into volts (electricity). It is then a simple matter of reading this voltage, and having it's intensity apply directly to photo exposure values.

I use the Sekonic 308, because I needed a very basic/simple meter that would read ambient light. It really is no different than setting it to an ISO... it then shows you what shutter speed to use for any given aperture. You then set your camera accordingly. They can also do a number of other little things.
