michaelk
I will be getting a 200 2.8 L and am wondering about which type of TC to get. I will be getting a 1.4 and can't afford Canons so it's Tamron, Sigma or Kenko. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mike
x
Buy a used Canon 1.4x. The results of this combination are so good that you will forever kick yourself for not buying the Canon.
david_lau3
I agree. I got the 1.4X from Canon. The image quality is almost the same as without the converter. Don't save the small amount of money and get an inferior product.
audun_sjoeseth1
Save some more money, and go for the EF1.4xII. I use it with my EF200/2.8L and 1N and I'm very happy with the results I get.
yakim_peled1
I agree as well. Save a few more pennies and get the Canon. I have both and it's an excellent combo. It'll be a shame not to put the best TC around on this magnificent lens. Happy shooting , Yakim.
adam_deglmann
KEH has a Canon 1.4x in excellent condition for $215.
michaelk
Is the canon 2x worth getting with 200 2.8 L or does it degrade the image to much?
nathan_dandar
I've seen shots of the 200mm f/2.8 L with the Canon 2X extender on it and they look... ehhh.... ok. Noticeably soft.
Anyway, I will also chime in and say look for a used Canon 1.4X if you can. I use that combination with my 200L and LOVE it.
The following were all taken with that combination:
Photo #1
Photo #2
Photo #3
Photo #
rob_murray
get the Canon you will like it. I have used the 1.4x on the300F4 and it is great, sure it will be as good on the 200.
darren_lodge
The 200 2.8 L + Canon 1.4x is a wicked combo. So much so, they are going to be my next purchases. I'd say go for a new 1.4x or a used 1.4 if you can't stretch to a new model. Darren
John Crowe
Go for the used Canon. That KEH deal looks pretty good and don't worry if it is the series I version. It's not a lot more than the Kenko/Tamron white ones which are next best. The best price I've seen for a Canon 1.4 on eBay was about $150 and it was a real beater. KEH is highly recommended on this site. As for the 2x it will be noticeably softer, whereas you will not notice much difference at all with the 1.4. For car racing I used to shoot a 200/2.8 with 2x and I would not have wanted to be without it but if you do not need the extra length on a regular basis I'd say go with the 1.4 for clarity. I eventually bought both. Tough choice, good luck!
ronald_smith2
The 200mm f/2.8 L and EF 2x TC works remarkably well; I have my 2x TC for sale in the Classifieds section of photo.net, if interested, and can provide photo samples.
michaelk
While I am intrested I wouldn't pay more than B&H charges new. At least thats with the newest exchange rates to dollars. Thanks anyway. Mike
michaelk
oops now I see you lowered it to about the same as B&H.
darklights
WoW....Nathan, those are some sharp pictures, and the colors are great. Don't mind me, just drooling over another lens\combo.
michaelk
Yes they do look sharp! I think I will sell some stuff on ebay so I can get a 1.4x canon. Together with the DRebel that comes to about 448mm F4, sweet! I had the 70-200 F4L and decided to take it back for the 200 2.8L.
