michael_spencer3
There have been several threads in this topical area related to artand photography or sometimes whether photography is art. TheWashington Post reports today that for the first time in its 63-yearhistory, the National Gallery of Art will be permanently dedicatinggallery space (about 3,000 sq feet) to photography. The NationalGallery's photo inventory started with a donation by Georgia o'Keeffeof her husband's (Stieglitz) work. The first show open's Oct 17 andfeatures Roger Fenton, a mid-1800's war photographer. He later didcountry houses, still life and the royal family. So, photography makes it to the big house. Is it art now?? Mike Spencer
brainbubba_motornapkins
Photography has been shown as fine art in major museums world-wide for decades. The NGA is just late to the party.
richard_milner2
Brainbubba is right. London's Victoria and Albert museum has collected photography for at least a decade and has a gallery sponsored by Canon and regular exhibitions and lectures. Tate Modern has several rooms of photography.
stuart_whatling
<i>"Tate Modern has several rooms of photography"</i> - More accurately (and in my view, crucially), the Tate has lots of photographic works in their collection BUT doesn't have rooms set aside specifially for them. They display photographic art like they do any other medium in amongst their thematic hangings, wherever it's most appropriate.
steve_swinehart
The Museum of Modern Art in New York has collected photographs for at least 60 years. The Smithsonian has JUST opened a museum dedicated to Native American art - I guess now that's finally considered art too? In both cases...better late than never... Or, it doesn't hurt to have a keen sense of the obvious. It just takes some institutions a little longer than others.
jeffpolaski
The Smithsonian has a Garrry Winogrand exhibit we're going to see this weekend. The Philadelphia Museum of Art constantly has Pphotographs on exhibit.
patrick_f
They actually have a pretty extensive photography collection, the problem is the lack of wall space! There is probably 3-4x more in storage than whats hanging on the walls at the NGA, and when everyone wants to see a room full of renoirs, photography naturally gets put to the side. I am glad to hear this though, and I look forward to seeing this when I get home!
john falkenstine
We have our own Center for photography here in Tucson, which has a LARGE GALLERY WITH CONSTANT SHOWS. So the question about big house and art are.....( ) Unfortunately, they also have a horrible, underdeveloped netsite with pixie picture samples....a serious "ART WORLD" Syndrome that needs to have its collective ass kicked...here you go http://dizzy.library.arizona.edu/branches/ccp/home/home.html
