Tony,

Hear, hear!

I enjoy this site because of the commonality with many of its users... Leica folks who

enjoy using their cameras. It provides the opportunity to communicate with people

whom you'll never meet (but possibly COULD down the road... who knows?)

Therefore, you might just as well be friendly and civil with each other... it's a slice of

fun and entertainment in an otherwise "too serious" world.

John Lo Pinto also makes a very, very good point in his posting... the comments that

you make, good, bad or downright foolish, will remain associated with your name for

a very long time to come.

Lastly, whatever the case with Al, he IS knowlegeable and GOOD for this site. His

comments are much more interesting than the dribble whereby someone always

manages to throw in the digital versus film, or the digital Nikon/Canon versus Leica

debates. I, for one, have learned a lot from Al's postings and enjoy reading them...

Thanks Al!

Cheers

<i>" ...in these days of intense worldwide anxiety and turmoil caused by the current US administration. "</i>

<p>

Yes our administration is f'd up, about as f'd up as any goddamn government can get. How many countries can claim they went from five trillion in the black to five trillion in debt in four years. Not many. The Soviet Union went from superpower to backwater in less than 50 years. Why? No guns, no nukes...overwhelming, crushing debt.

<p>

Let's get one thing straight nobody f*cks up better then we do, nobody, and were still walking and talking.

<p>

Sure we got all the wrong people in all the wrong places, rarely does our administration know which way is up, so what. The bottom line is that's it our administration and with it we'll run the world as we see fit.

Moderators, You should keep this thread open in perpetuity and somehow shunt OT-ers and others here to vent their spleens, frustrations and raves instead of finding their way into well-intentioned and civil threads about Leica-related photography. Then, they may remain glued to this thread and leave the rest of the PN in relative peace. Caveat: The rest of PN may become a bit boring.

I don't see how :

1) bashing each other over what gears are better libelous(sp).

2) calling someone's work below par libelous(sp).

3) demanding people to post pix before they can comment libelous(sp).

4) complaining about dust over a digital image on the web libelous(sp).

5) calling others POV about gears BS libelous(sp)

etc

I think that's what's happening often enough here. Show me a libelous statement anywhere here. Are we even using our real names?

Keep it classy? That I agree.

Hi Pete

Good question I often wondered WTF Leica photography was. Before I visited here I

thought I was just another small format photographer with funny old cameras, then I

learned I was really a wanker with too much money.

I think Leica Photography it is pretty well 35mm format photography with expensive

lenses. I don't believe Leica photography can be done with R series cameras, I think

that comes under Minolta photography. Sometimes SL and L'flex photography can be

Leica photography but that seems to be grey area.

Cheers C.

Trashing another person's work is not libelous as long as it is done fairly. Attacking another person's personality or intentions in posting a photograph can be. For example recently someone called me a "voyeur" because I posted some photos of people on a bridge in Osaka--a street photo like many others posted here. In another thread I was accused of having a "Lolita Complex" because I posted shots of young women (about 19 to 20) wearing fairly modest summer clothing who had sponaneously posed for me in a way that only the Taliban would call improper. These two attacks were libeous. They were also utterly stupid.

Recently, a poster started a thread that linked to the website of a Mountain Biker. The purpose of this thread was to make fun of the mountain biker. This could be libelous. It was certainly mean-spirited in a gratutiously petty sort of way. The joke is that the mountain biker is far more successful at what he does than his original detractor.

There can be other forms of abuse which could be actionable. Recently an individual visited threads of a patron saying that we should all boycott him. This could be libelous. It was definately harassment, which can be actionable. In other cases which I can detail to the moderators, groups of posters attacked an individual poster in ways that were essentially personal. Possibly the poster attacked could sue for mental distress.

In a lively form such as this people "losing it" is going to happen from time to time. I have "lost it" I am not proud to say. It becomes a problem when one individual makes it a habit of attacking people for no apparently good reason or singles out an individual. Al Kaplan, who is one of the nicest and most inoffensive individuals on this website has been sniped at by a certain individual for no reason other than (I believe) jealousy. Al is well loved in this Forum; that individual is not. There are good reasons for this. When that individual made some ugly remarks about not only Al but our loved ones in regard to the Al Kaplan T-shirt, I let him have it where it hurt. That was deliberate and I am not sorry.

I am very sorry for the times I did "lose it" or was wrong-headed. I'd like to say sorry to some people right now.

Grant: I trashed an excellent photo of your on moral grounds--I felt you were degrading a family eating their lunch. It was all too Goody-Two Shoes of me. HCB said he wouldn't photograph people in distress and that has been my approach. But they were not in distress--they were only a little funny. I know stuff I've posted here has been far less kind than your shot of those utterly awkward people wolfing down lunch. I've learned my lesson. Good photography is often unkind. So be it. Please post that pix again, grant. It is brilliant.

Mike Dixon: I satirized a work of yours to make a point earlier this year. I went way overboard and the point was lost. I feel very badly about this because it was work that I admired--your photo diary of crossing the US. It is also the sort of work I actively encourage. I believe in the validity of personal narrative, as did Emerson who predicted (wrongly) that in the future the personal narrative would replace the novel. Mike, I was wrong. Very wrong. Sorry.

I was too rough on Andrew Sommerset earlier this year. If he is reading this I hope he can forgive me.

I fear I might have inadvertantly offended Al Kaplan in an e-mail to him. If I have, please forgive me, Al.

Also Jon. I was to rough on him, however a pain he could be. The young man is a fine photog.

The is the season for atonement and this thread may be the best place for it. If there is anyone I've forgotten please let me know.

There are a few individuals who need not apply. I shall presume they know who they are.

You know, whether people sue photo.net or each other or not, cruelty has a way of spoiling the fun that we are supposed to be having here. When you spend the day thinking about personalities on Photo.net and the Leica Forum rather than photography something is off somewhere.

Maybe we ought to have an atonement thread where people say sorry to each other and make up.

Whatever, we should keep in mind that this form, as all forums on Photo,net, are not just about photos but also about words.

It's how you handle those words. How can anyone control anyone what to say? If I need to tell you what to say and it what tone, then probably we shouldn't even be talking. If you feel libeled(sp!) on the net, sue, simple.

A better way would be to adapt to the environment and find your own niche or pals.
