tommy huynh
I can't remember if this is the case but Canon flashes use the standard shoe dimensions right? I'm looking to build an array and need a way of mounting several 580EXs to a mount. Would this product work?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=119417&is=REG
hkbmac
They will work, but not in TTL mode. AFAIK Minolta is the only one with a non standard mount.
kraig_cuddeford
looks like it would short all the contacts under the flash.
jimstrutz
Canon shoes use a flange thickness that is not quite the average of most cameras. I can't remember if it's thicker than most or thinner, but I remember that it's difficult to force some combinations together. Oddly enough, there seems to be no real standards on shoe size, but with a little force you can get most flash units to fit on most shoes (except for Minolta). There was discussion about this on photo.net some years ago. The link you point to does look that generic shoe will short out the pins on the flash, and I'm not sure how that will effect things. But the 550EX (and I assume the 580EX) comes with a little plastic table top mount that the flash foot slips into, and it has a 1/4x20 screw hole in the bottom so you could mount it on a tripod or light stand. If you want to mount several Speedlites to a rack or something, 1/4x20 bolts would probably be the easier method since the mounts come with the flash. awindsor
I presume that you will use wireless E-TTL and are looking for purely a way of mounting the flash. Stroboframe make a universal shoe mount too.
kraig_cuddeford
the 580ex does include the tablestand/tripod adaptor.
poulbh
You could use this shoe, that doesn't short the 5 pins of the 550EX http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home;jsessionid=BpUweR9HEL!-1971370343?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=5183&is=REG (sorry don't know how to post links)
bill_goldman
The Custom Brackets MC Cold Shoe is a cheaper alternative.
tommy huynh
Thanks for the responses. Yes, I will be using wireless E-TTL. I thought about using the foot that the flash comes with but need a smaller and "cleaner" solution. What I will be making is a ringflash array where the shoe mounts will be attached to an aluminum ring around the lens so I don't want to use anything that takes up much space and may cover the lens controls. BTW, has anybody know definitively if shorting out the flash pins has an effect?
