kevin m.
Anyone on this forum planning on doing any shooting during the Republican convention in NYC? Care to share any news/tips about getting in and around the area of the convention?
back_alley_.
you might want to rephrase that...

bacsa
after this post, i think several well-dressed serious-faced folks are already knocking on Kevin's door:) "shooting during the republican convention", hehh!
stuart_whatling
Try to find a grassy knoll to stand on.
sammer
Unless you have press credentials, the situation is currently completely ambiguous. The protestors will be marching past Madison Sq. Gdn, but won't get very close as security will be tight and surrounding streets will be closed to anyone without a pass or badge. Location of rally is currently subject to tremendous tug of war between protest groups and NYC city hall... Plan on massive delays getting there as Penn Station will be closed and probably several subway stations as well. They are making it as difficult as possible, but don't let that stop you. It should be an interesting time to say the least.
olivier_reichenbach
You mean, they are actually holding a Republican convention? What for? ;)
Jerry_
Easy --> just paint your van, auto, or (rent-a-bus) vehicle like this and you should have no trouble getting inside the building.<div></div>
leslie_cheung
Get dress with red, white and blue all over preferably with a few flags somewhere and don't shoot with a big zoom from afar but I'm wouldn't be surprised if you get sprayed (gas and rubber bullets) anyway after what happened in Miami last november. The all suited up robocops doesn't give a damn, they shot at all people randomly from "anarchists" to PJs to older peaceful demostrators. The only ones that were safe were the ones "embedded" behind the police line. Hopefully NYC cops have abit more sense of humanity. Lastly, If you are willing to get in the middle of the action, leave your leicas at home and get some canon/nikon/pentax zoom cam that you wouldn't mind losing in the chaos. robert_kennedy
I second that. Things may get VERY nasty there. You will NOT be able to get into the convention. Let me put it this way, in New Mexico, they made anyone who wasn't a known supporter sign a "loyalty oath" to get INTO the Bush rally. And no, I am NOT joking. http://www.abqjournal.com/elex/204620elex07-30-04.htm So your only chance at ANY shots will be with the protesters in the "protester ghetto". And the chances of that going FUBAR is REALLY REALLY REALLY HIGH. So.... Take the crappy cameras with the zooms. Take SEVERAL extra UV filters. Cheap ones to protect the lens (you may go through a couple). A wrench to pry off destroyed filters, a LOT of water, and if possible, a small gas mask. Oh, and well padded clothing. Maybe even a flak jacket. And I am NOT kidding here. Those rubber bullets HURT.
randy_skopar
I wouldn't go near that place. Leftists think that people who disagree with them are evil, so they are ready to send people off to the camps or kill them. There will be a lot of fanatic leftists out on the streets near the convention, which creates a huge potential for violence. The New York police are very professional, but there are people who'd like to turn this into the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago. Just stay away--the bombs might hit your side of the street, and you'd be the picture, not take it.
eliot_rosen
More mindless Republican bashing by equally midnless (and unfunny) leftists. I don't remember hearing any of your stupid jokes about the stupid Democratic convention.
jpb
First off, Penn Station will not be closed. Secondly, the protesters will not be present within eyeshot of MSG. Most likely they will be on the most western edge of the city. Thirdly, except for isolated and high profile incidents, the NYPD of late has been a fine example of restraint under pressure. They are the most professional PD in the nation. And lastly, I have met some seriously funny and unfunny people on both sides of every debate. And to say they liberals have a penchant for violence is so inaccurate that all I have to do is point to a newspaper, even the most conservative of which will plainly show that conservatives have at least as high a regard for violence as any other politicized human. vic_.
Since it's being held at MSG, I wonder if it will resemble a basketball game or a hockey game, if you know what I mean. The last GOP convention was definitely basketball.
jim_simmons
Speaking of the fracas in Miami, the Miami police purchased all the riot gear for that event with money from the Patriot Act. I guess they thought those protestors were terrorists.
absinthe
James, the protestors have permission to march along 7th avenue right past MSG's doorstep. The rally point is the area of contention

vic_.
This might be the first convention with possible fatalities, as things might get out of hand.
jpb
Hi Heather, I think, regardless of what the rules currently say, they have not yet been finalized, so it remains to be seen what happens when they?re actually implemented. Also, for anyone advising bringing the less expensive equipment, keep in mind that if you bust your equipment, B&H is literally down the block! olivier_reichenbach
Randy Skopar's comments are another living proof that many people in the US are now terrified by lies and populist simplifications: Anti-Republican = leftist = violent. No wonder Dumbya has succeeded in deceiving so many of his countrymen.
feli
>Randy Skopar , aug 11, 2004; 03:40 p.m. >I wouldn't go near that place. Leftists think that people who disagree >with them are evil, so they are ready to send people off to the camps >or kill them. Hmmm, I had no idea that Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pal Pot, Kim Jong and the rest of them were a bunch of lefty, hippies. Guess you learn something new everyday. randy_skopar
I don't know about Mussolini, but all the others you mention were, indeed, leftist. Hitler, recall, was a National Socialist. Stalin, of course, and Lenin were the epitome of leftist/Socialist tactics and views.
jack_lo_..._t_o
Except, Randy, that people who tried to mollify communist policy were called "liberals", and those who wanted to increase the repression were called "arch-conservatives" Proving that these terms don't mean a heck of a lot, except maybe to people that want to use them to polarise the situation, and are more interested in name calling than exchanging points of view. john_elder1
I haven't been paying any attention the the conventions, but this one DEFINETLY sounds interesting. WHEN IS IT?
eliot_rosen
I agree Olivier. Many liberals/lefties on this site, not violent, just angry, wrong, and not too bright. :-) You guys asked for it by using this question as license to bash Bush and Republicans.
