Hi all

I just wanted to give you the head's up about a scammer in Texas who

has been trading under the name of www.canont90.com. I had a Canon

EOS 630 which Canon will no longer service, so I was forced to seek out an

alternative place to have the camera repaired. I found this guy quite by

chance because my neigbour had a Canon T90 which needed fixing.

I thought it odd that he didn't have an office number, even odder that he

didn't answer but rather called me back, but pushed ahead with it anyway.

he sounded like a decent guy and further enquiry revealed that he could fix

EOS gear as well, so I sent him an EOS 630, an EF f2 100mm lens, my

neighbour's trashed T90 and $440.00. This was in mid March. I paid him up

front because I was going to be out of the country for 3 weeks and didn't want

to keep him waiting for his payment unnecessarily.

Anyhow, I returned from abroard to find that he still hadn't returned the

equipment. My neibour informed me that this guy had sent him a replacement

T90 with a major malfunction. He wouldn't answer the neigbour's calls either.

Just sent him an e-mail, telling that he'd have to send him a money order for

$25.00 in order to get a replacement camera. As you can imagine, my

neigbour was pretty suspect on him, but wanted to get it over and done with,

so he sent him the money order. He never heard from him again after this

time at all.

I took this guy (Steve Wright) to task over all this and he got all defensive and

claimed he was going to return my gear un-repaired. (It had already been

over a month at this time and he obviously hadn't even begun the job.

Anyhow, I relented and he has strung me along with constant excuses ever

since. Keep in mind that he's never answered a call except once where he

pretended that he couldn't hear me. Funny thing is that he has always sent

me an e-mail with yet another lame excuse when I tried calling him. Not

wanting to kiss my money and equipment goodbye, I kept my e-mails as

cordial as possible, but to no avail. I'd always get an excuse like "it's going

out tomorrow". A recent attempt to contact him was met with an e-mal

claiming that he was in the U.K. "liquidating assets". I finally got fed up and

told him so. He basically has ceased ansering e-mails now.

This guy is a thief who has scammed me out of my euipment and my money.

He appears to have no consience at all.

I don't know how he continues to get good ratings with eBay. he must have

a bunch of alias's and be using those. I just don't know. All I do know is that

I'm out of pocket for my money and gear and it looks pretty bad.

Do not do business with this guy. He will rip you off.

Where is this guy located? Some places in Texas are a 3 day drive!

I use the Canon Authorized repair facility called I.C.T. (INDEPENDANT CAMERA TECHNITION). Mike is the owner and does all the work for all the shops. phone 972 241-1947. He just recently moved into a larger location in North Dallas (Carrollton, Tx. a suburb about 3 miles north of dallas).

Anyway, whats the address of the shop you sent it to, maybe he needs a little VISIT....

Sean,

Whoa! That's the worst camera repair story I've ever heard. Sorry for your misfortune. On a personal note; I had contacted Steve about a month ago regarding a CLA on my EF. He seamed, through e-mails, to be a reputable guy, or at least articulate and friendly anyway. There was that lag time between contacting him and me actually sending the camera. In that time a thread surfaced on this forum about a buyer that received a different lens (FDn bayonet versus FD breech lock) than the one he stated. That's not the thing that bothered me, it was his response to the buyer "you get what you saw and that lens is worth more money" Oh really? So much for a customer service department and providing the buyer at least one option. (I don't really know, maybe he did) Sure it's a little thing but an ebay auction is a contract and since I deal with contracts daily that's all I needed to decline on having him repair my EF. Sounded iffy then and sounds like a total disaster now. I certainly hope everything turns around in your favor, I'm sure his story would be different, but then what could you have done differently? You sent him the camera and the payment.....right? then, in my mind, you've held up your end. Good luck

I know nothing about this person. I have now and will always used Steve out in Nevada for my T90 service. His work is second to none, his emalls are honest and friendly, and he will not make a move on your camera that is out of the ordinary without calling you first. Here is he email: Steven40@aol.com

Everyone, I am a very fair minded person. I really am. Why else would have I

paid Steve the whole amount up front. I checked out his site. It looks

professional and as I have mentioned to him previously, it looks like a site that

was built by a guy who takes pride in his work, so naturally, I was happy to

send him some work that I needed done. I just don't see any valid excuse

for keeping a customers equipment and payment from them for 5 months

(much of that time, despite my repeated requests for it's return).

I would now like to let you all know that my camera and lens have just

been returned in the past couple of days, along with a replacement for my

neigbour's camera (as was the original agreement). The replacement T90

looks like it might actually work O.K. but my lens definitely still doesn't focus

and the 630 does still show signs of oil on the rear shutter, which is why both

were sent for repair. So to sum things up, I now have my equipment back at

last and am more than happy to share that fact with everyone. It would have

been nice though if it had been repaired during it's 5 month odyssey.

Now, asuming that the T90 camera works fine, that would leave an balance

of $200 ($100 ea) for the 630 and 100mm lens repairs. As of writing this, I

have not recieved any refund as yet, but I will let you know if I do. Like I said, I

am a fair minded person.

Judging by some of your responses, Steve has recently been good to deal

with, so I don't understand why I was treated differently from you. I wish only

the best for people who treat others with professionalism and respect.

He stole my Canon F-1N and a number of other people's equipment from E-bay. One of the best camera repair men out there my ass. He ran away to Kennesaw GA, closed his website, his email and changed his phone number and is an outright theif. He has had numerous police reports filed. Look at his current ebay feedback for proof. This guy is awful.

This is a post I made to the CanonFD Yahoo group back on 08 of 2004, but reinforces some of the sentiments stated here:

I don't know what was up with Steve Wright, as he came highly recommended, but I certainly didn't like my experience with

him. He was quite bad at communicating with me about what was happening, as I waited over three months to get my cameras back, after repeated attempts to contact him, by both email and phone, that went unanswered.

I was also rather unhappy about the repair on my F-1N, as I paid him to replace the film sprocket, which was broken, as he was in the camera anyway to do other things, so it only made sense...but he claimed that I was wrong about the sprocket being cracked, which I doubted very much so, as I am seldom wrong about something like that...but he assured me it wasn't, and was fine...but of course, I got my camera back, and sure enough, the top of the sprocket had the same broken off piece sitting in it that was there when I sent it to him. I can only give him the benefit of the doubt (though I'm

hard pressed to do so) and believe he simply didn't see it, but I should have been more insistent that he simply do what I asked (and paid for). I'm now going to have to spend another $170 to have it replaced...so I am out, basically, the cost of that repair.

He claimed that he had sent me the cameras and that I refused the

delivery...but when asked what carrier he used and what was the tracking number, he simply ignored the request and never provided it. When I did get the box, it had no signs of ever being refused...as it was a used box that someone else sent him their camera in, so it had other postage etc. on it, but no signs that I could see of it being refused.

Perhaps he has a good explanation for it, but he certainly never gave one to me. In fact, I emailed him with my dissatisfaction with the F-1N repair, and it went unanswered. So, I certainly wouldn't recommend him to anyone based on my experience.

I am generally very hesitant to say anything like the above about someone on such a public forum, but hearing that others have had such problems, I believe it's important to bring these issues up. If he can take public praise, then he surely can take public criticism.

Regards,

Austin
