william_blair1
I have been tracking a 10D offered for sale on ebay for the past few days. I am going to be gone from home for an extended period (six months/middle east)and was toying with the idea of upgrading from my 300D/Rebel with which I am actually quite satisfied for the time being. I am nevertheless a bit of a gear head. Today when I checked ebay, it was enundated with 10D's from dealers. Is this normal? Much more than I have normally seen. I don't hang around ebay alot, so I am not sure. The prices are not yet very good, mostly worthless kits of dubious value. With all the recent speculation on 10D replacements on this and other sites, I wonder if they are spooked by the speculation or really know something (which I doubt). It will be interesting to watch prices there in the next few weeks leading up to Photokina. I think I will stick with my Dreb and 28-135 IS for the duration of my deployment to whereever. yakim_peled1
>> I am going to be gone from home for an extended period (six months/middle east). Will you be going to Israel by any chance? If so, I may be of help if you need info. >> I think I will stick with my Dreb and 28-135 IS for the duration of my deployment to whereever. Sound like a good idea. Happy shooting , Yakim. william_blair1
Yakim, I have always enjoyed your posts and efforts to help new photographers. Unfortuntately, this time I will not be visiting your wonderful country, but a less hospitable one. I don't won"t to get into middle eastern politics on this forum. PM If you wish. I would be interested in your perspectives of life in your area. v/r Bill
ron c sunshine coast, qld,a
No matter what you hear about new models, there will be doubts as to the truth because canon haven't leaked anything significant on DSLR's......ever(?) <br>For what it's worth though, there was a post recently about canon dealers being told not only of a 10d upgrade/replacement but also several lenses(including a superwide zoom). cfimages
I've noticed here in Taiwan that 10D's have had a price drop of about NT$10000 - which is somewhere around US$300. Might mean something, might not. Even with the price drop, they are still more expensive than what they were in the US when they were released. jon_austin
The most likely reason for dealers to drop their prices are either because they have excess inventory (do camera body sales slow down in the summer months?) or because the prices from their distributors / manufacturers have dropped. I would imagine that the state of Canon's 10D inventory is as closely held a secret as its future product announcements, but if their 10D production capacity is at or ahead of demand, it would make sense for them to lower their pricing to distributors/dealers, regardless what new product(s) is/are waiting in the wings... bobatkins
Sales do drop in the summer, plus whether it's real or not, the anticipation of a new model being available in a few months time will have an effect on sales. I wouldn't say Canon and dealers are "dumping" the 10D (which implies selling below their cost), but I would guess that many dealers who aren't official Canon retailers (and thus aren't told by Canon exactly what's coming) and who have a large stock of 10D bodies might be getting nervous that the announcemnt of a new model could affect their sales, so they're trying to sell their stock before that happens - if it does. I don't see a fire sale on the 10D. If Canon come out with something new at $1500 or so, a 10D at $1200 might still make sense for some buyers. It really depends on how much Canon tweak any possible replacement model. Any replacement model is still probably 3 months away from hitting the streets, so getting a good deal on a 10D right now isn't a totally dumb move if you want to get into a DSLR. j. callahan
They have come down some, Adorama has them for $1300, I believe.
robin_sibson1
The Canon UK ebay outlet has been releasing 10D bodies, officially described as refurbished, at about two per day over the last week or more, and and at least some have been going at the start price of 700 pounds plus VAT (17.5 percent). Interestingly, there have also been lots of 28~135 lenses (at 250 pounds plus VAT). These are facts. Inferences are drawn at your own risk! bobatkins
All the major stores (B&H, Adorama, Amazon) have had them at $1300 for a few weeks now. Price drops aren't unusal and in the pre-digital days (before the life span of a camera model was 12-18 months) didn't signify anything very much. I think the EOS-3 came in at $1300 (or was it $1500?) and it's now down to the $800 level, but nobody attributes that to the imminent arrival of a new EOS-3n or to "dumping" the stock of E0S-3 bodies. suhaskulkarni
I wonder what will happen to poor digital rebel, if the prices of 10D further come down... guess Canon has a plan to obsolete that model.
digitmstr
A 10D costs $300.00 USD in TAIWAN? I am going to buy two more!
suhaskulkarni
the $300 mentioned is price drop -not the price.Unless you are joking.

jon_austin
"I wonder what will happen to poor digital rebel, if the prices of 10D further come down... guess Canon has a plan to obsolete that model." Why? If the retail price of the 10D has (more or less officially) dropped a couple of hundred bucks, there's no reason why Canon can't drop the price of the dRebel at least $150 or so. I routinely see the dRebel + EF-S lens kit on sale in stores for $100 below MSRP, and that's without hunting for bargains from Web vendors. adam_deglmann
I work at Circuit City and even we're dropping the price of 10Ds. We went from $1500 to $1400 a couple weeks ago. We still sell DRebels for MSRP of $999 though.
denny_kyser
I am considering getting a back up to my 10D, now may be a good time to do it. I love mine and was considering getting a Medium Format for a back up but hard to do that when I have all my good canon lenses. The 10D is plenty of camera for me at this point of my career and I am getting outstanding results from it. I just am not sure about my Elan 7E as a back up, so may get another 10D. tan
Denny, instead of buying another 10D so you will have a backup, why not use your current 10D as the backup and get the 10D Mark II as your main body? Shouldn't have to wait too long .....
Greg M
Doesn't make much sense to get a medium format film backup for a digital camera. If you truly need to carry a backup you'll be faced with having to tote film and extra lenses & backs along too all the time for that one chance that something breaks. At $4000+ for a 1D mark II I can understand why you might want a 10D instead. I've just bought a 10D to replace my Digital Rebel, which will now be my backup. Why wait for the new models? The replacement for the 10D isn't going to be 10+ megapixels or have a 1.3 or full sized sensor, and even if it did it sure wouldn't be priced anywhere near the 10D at it's current price level, so the next generation will be a non-issue for many, including myself. josh1
Or you could just use your 10D as a backup to your Elan 7e;) Then get yourself a Coolscan V 4000 dpi film scanner for around 500 bucks and a brick of slide film. You'll be amazed at what digital images you can get. I'll put one of my 4000 dpi scanned slides up against an image from a DRebel or 10D anyday. I'm not a digi-hater though. I get tired of paying for film and developing costs. However, I still want a big fatty sensor. I want my wide angles. Common Canon. Where's my full frame thousand dollar DSLR? Pleeeeeaaase.... cfimages
Giampiero, I wish the 10D was $300! Then i'd buy a lot, and sell em on ebay and make a killing. They actually cost about $1750 here - a few weeks ago they were over $2000.
robert_turner
Much as I wish I didn't agree- you are so right. I love my 10d, but a nice 4000 scan of a Sensia slide has dynamic range, depth and just WOW factor the 10d can't touch. Too bad it takes me, including scan time, 500% longer to get images this way. Guess that explains why I take 100 shot from my 10d for every 1 with my EOS-1.
ron c sunshine coast, qld,a
It makes me just plain depressed thinking of having to do photography with slide film again. It just looks SO fake.
subha
I saw 10D pricing at ExpressCamera.com for $999.00 (Do a simple google search for Canon 10D). And i also saw two other unbelievable low prices. royalcamera.com: $679.00 (body) amphotoworld.com : $809.00 and the rebel there is $539.00? The bottom two sites don't give any warranty.. wilfred_m_rand
you won't get a camera from them at this price either...unless you buy $1000 worth of other stuff.
